[CNN] Comcast and Time Warner Cable hike modem fees as much as 33%. Time to buy your own. - Page 5

I would not buy a new modem just yet. A new DOCSIS standard is on the horizon to support even faster speeds than what is currently available.

In other words, don't waste your money. Even with the price hike, it's not worth it to buy a new modem... yet.

I've heard this said many times, but never really had it explained to me why. Why is it better to do this exactly?

Providers aren't going to upgrade their facilities to DOCSIS 3.1 anytime soon, and even if they do they won't be offering bandwidths that exceed DOCSIS 3.0 anytime soon either. DOCSIS 3.1 has been unofficial for awhile now, and even prior to that the specifications weren't very different for a long time.

If someone sees a good deal on a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, grab one, or even two for that matter.

Hmmmm, my model rental fee from TWC has been $4 for the longest time. Maybe it's because I live in Kansas City or because I'm on a promotion.

Any ways back to OP. I don't see the issue here. If people are that stupid and willing to pay it. I say why not? They could have raised it more between $12-$15 and still been fine. Sheeple don't know any better.

I bought the same one. Dont poop on his dreams. Our modem will last years before comcast maxes out its speed and a decade if not more when it becomes cost efficient to buy that tier.

Your 24x8 wont be coming out for months, and that isnt an acceptable wait for someone like me who needed to buy a modem as i have no other (due to giving the old one to my family). Also next year is docsis 3.1, which your modem wont support, so yours will be outdated in the same time frame as ours.

This is why I love my ISP. "We will remove the modem rental fee for net speeds requiring DOCSIS 3.0 or higher" in the end you pay liuke $15 more for a huge boost over normal. (159 with 150mbps) and MOCA actiontec (which is sold for $100 now at local tigerdirect) is $1 a month for the "ECHO" Service. and do note out of state we have access to TWCs wifi hotspots requiring login.

I do believe my ISP used to be part of TWC however but purchased florida out of their hands after some severely hot issues if I remember right (since it used to be roadrunner)

good riddance

our local TD actually has some very good high end D3 Modems from ARRIS/UBEE/MOTOROLA etc for cheap because of BHN along with actiontecs MOCA extenders that they do not list on their website.

Since I know some techs however everything I have is the best equipment they had at the cage, or I waited. its nice sometimes when ISP can remote access everything and help you setup something you missed.

(Our tiered tech support is very small)

I fought this charge... even though I use the wifi. My defense to them was that I could just buy a separate modem and wifi router and they couldn't do a thing about it because they would never know if a customer was using wifi or not and it's none of their business.

They also charge you like about a dollar a month extra if you have the modem, router, phone combo modem for the phone part even if you didn't get their phone service. It's a fee for the emergency line or something.

Thats odd. (since mines "technically" a TWC offshoot) for us if they have those boxes free and you need one, they just give it to you. Heck here you can specify whatever you want by brand if they stock it they will give it to you. might delay visit since its with another tech, but youll get it. no emergency line fee for us. though we have basic phone package thats oddly-tied to vonage in some weird fashion that takes over ISP package

Im a lil late on the subject. But what's a good modem and router set up for future proofing? Say 150-200mbps through-put up and down ?
