so i have a g3258k and fx 4100 on there way Monday hopefully and just want to know which is going to be better at gaming to put a graphics card in for low end gaming with 4870 overclocked

Stock vs Stock the Intel is faster. The FX-4100 might be faster in some scenarios when overclocked but will not produce good results in poorly threaded games due to it being an Bulldozer arc chip.

I would take the that pentium over a 4100 any day. In very few tasks would the 4100 outperform a g3258.

Both will be water chilled and overclocked asfar as they can go if that makes a change:p

4.5GHz is the upper limit of the G3258. It doesn't hit a temperature limit, it hits a volt limit. 4100 might be able to go a bit further with the help of water, but it will still lose in a lot of games.

I've had 3 of the G3258's. One did 4.5 at 1.252 and the other two did 4.3 at 1.35. I didn't matter how much more voltage I threw at each chip beyond that. They just wouldn't go any further. Kind of weird.

Obviously I didn't try 1.5, but anything up to 1.4 wasn't allowing for a higher overclock.

oh thats strange what kinda of temps did you hit with them at 1.35?

also im guessing these aint like 775 e8400 ect less heat more volts higher clocks?

Stock cooler and not even close to tj max.

The one Pentium I own gets too close to TJ max on stock cooler above 1.2v.
That's odd. You might have needed to reseat or re apply paste. Those Pentiums are really cool.

You need to change more than Vcore to OC Haswell. A minimalist, easy OC would pin some variables and then adjust Core multiplier, Vcore and Input Voltage. Without doing at least that much work, you will hit some hard walls quite early in the overclocking process that you can't pass.

Luckily, a ton of people have been around documenting this for the last year and a half in order to make a thread at http://www.overclock.net/t/1411077/haswell-overclocking-guide-with-statistics which 90% of people seem to be unaware of and 80% of the people who see the thread just skip through without reading and then ask a bunch of questions that have been asked 50 times before and answered in great detail in the OP.

4.5ghz ceiling on a Pentium? If you got a bad chip, sure. Some of them will wall out at 4.5ghz, 1.425v for example. If you're using less vcore and walling out, it's a pebkac issue or a problem with the motherboard.

It's also possible that my case setup was causing those temps if many people are reporting that the stock cooler can keep them cool even under heavy OCs. It was inside of one of those extremely small rosewill cube cases with a GPU and power supply. However from what I had heard other people were reporting the stock cooler is perfectly acceptable for 4-4.2GHz but above that starts to struggle to keep them cool.

I didn't test the other two Pentiums with a stock cooler as both people asked for them to be water cooled.

Yeah but that actually requires a big case. A Zalman CNSP8900 should be able to cool a Pentium till it hits silicon wall without needing 160mm clearance.

Well i think these cheap intel cpu will be fun for a few days hopfully i can maybe see a 5000 run
biggrin.gif
then back to a 24-7 overclock on silent water cooling set up

Right on! Make a new thread and post results

1.4 should be pretty ok with the pentium. Basically anywhere from 1.2 to 1.5 at load depending on how many load hours you put the chip under (folding@home for 500 hours a month is very different than gaming 3 hours a night on it), the temperatures and overall how large your testicles/ovaries are
