How to correctly leak test your loop......101?

Thread Starter
This is a thread explaining a simple method of dry testing a loop or reassembled blocks to guarantee watertightness before filling.
The current accepted method of filling and crossing your fingers is,to my mind, unacceptable when for $20-£20 outlay you could have a professional leak tester with all the uncertainty taken out.

The parts list.

1 1/4" BSPP Equal Tee
1 Pressure gauge,1/4" BSPP thread,20 PSI gauge limit is best as it will allow you to see very small pressure drops easily
1 Schrader valve,1/4" BSPP thread.

Assemble like so....

Use PTFE tape on all threads to make a good air seal.

Test the unit with a blanking plug fitted, pump it up to 25 PSI and leave it,any pressure loss means a leak,it HAS to be airtight before use.

I use a Bitspower d plug on the end as I can just screw on side on then push the unit into place rather than screwing the whole thing on.

Attach to your fillport or any port thats free.

Pump it up with a hand pump to around 10-12 PSI.

Any leaks will result in a pressure drop which the gauge will show.

To find those pesky leaks, use a qtip with dish soap or childrens bubble liquid around any suspect fittings, any leaks with blow bubbles allowing for a clean, simple fix rather than having to drain the loop and starting again.

For opened blocks, seal the other ports with blanking plugs and pump up,any pressure loss is indication of a leak.

There,a simple and nigh on fool proof leak test method.

Definitely a great way to test. I did this after coming across it in the WC Club thread and it worked quite well. Home Depot sells a natural gas pressure tester that will include a low psi guage as well as a Schrader valve. You just need to hit up the brass fitting section to find a block to screw those into after you remove them from the gas line fitting. Link to said psu tester http://www.homedepot.com/p/DANCO-0-15-psi-1-10-Increment-Gas-Test-Gauge-94352/100180536

I still tested with water after but I wanted to make sure. The air pressure found a definite leak which had to be solved with an adapter. First time I've ever been disappointed with an EK block design...

This is great - I'll use this on my first WC build I'm putting together. Thanks B! +Rep

Oooh, nice find there. + rep

I already have an air pressure test setup for leak testing that I use that currently needs two ports, one for the schrader valve and one for the air gauge ...

Here's some tips on doing so from IT Diva (Darlene):
http://www.overclock.net/t/584302/ocn-water-cooling-club-and-picture-gallery/56480_20#post_21458126

And a similar earlier post from B Negative:
http://www.overclock.net/t/584302/ocn-water-cooling-club-and-picture-gallery/56240_20#post_21445206

After seeing both of their posts, I did something similar but a bit simpler than they suggested. I ordered some 1/4 NPT threaded Schrader valves and a 30 PSI gauge of eBay and fitted them into Koolance G 1/4" Male to NPT 1/4" Female adapters I got from FrozenCPU so they can be screwed into any available port in my loop. It works great! I pump it up to ~8-9 PSI (I use an air compressor but a bicycle pump could be used just as well) and let the loop sit to see if there's any leakdown at all. Here I am doing a leak-test with them screwed into two top fill ports...

pressure_gauge_loop_leak_test

And I know that I easily could combine those two into one with just a t-fitting, but I like having them separate for my current build. I'm just not so sure whether all of my future builds will have two available ports accessible like that so I just went ahead and ordered the Home Depot one you linked for customer pickup so I can have a backup tester ready-to-go that only needs one port.

I also ordered a 3/4 MPT x 1/2" barb fitting so I can attach that to a short length of 1/2 tubing to a G1/4 barb fitting that I can screw into any available port in a loop...

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Watts-3-4-in-x-1-2-in-Plastic-Barb-x-MPT-Adapter-A589/202257613

My local store didn't have either item currently in stock but they have free 'ship to store', and I drive right by there every time I go to work, so good to go. thumb.gif

Edit: And I shouldn't forget to give props to B Neg for creating this thread. Air pressure testing is some of the best advice I've ever taken from you, and just like VSG says, it's nice to finally have a dedicated thread to point others to.

So cruising through McMastercarr I think I replicated the setup minus the dual male to male rotary fitting.

  • 1x British Standard Threaded Brass Pipe Fitting, 1/4 Pipe Size, BSPP Female Tee (4860K452)
  • 2x BSPT/BSPP/Metric High-Pressure Steel Threaded Fitting, 1/4 NPT Female x 1/4 BSPP Male Adapter (4936K119)
  • 1x Multipurpose Gauge, Steel Case, 2" Dial, 1/4 NPT Bottom, 0 - 30 PSI (3846K6)
  • 1x Brass Air Fill Valve, Straight, 1/4 NPT, 1-5/16" Overall Length (8063K37)

In total the list comes out to $35.12 USD without Shipping/Taxes.

Does that seem on point with what your setup? I'm thinking it might be cheaper to find all parts in 1/4 NPT threading and just buy 1x 1/4 NPT to 1/4 BPSS adapater.

Edit: Yeah, its cheaper going all NPT and just getting an adapter for NPT to BSPP.

  • 1x Multipurpose Gauge, Steel Case, 2" Dial, 1/4 NPT Bottom, 0 - 30 PSI (3846K6)
  • 1x Brass Air Fill Valve, Straight, 1/4 NPT, 1-5/16" Overall Length (8063K37)
  • 1x Low-Pressure Brass Threaded Pipe Fitting, 1/4 Pipe Size, Tee (4429K251)
  • 1x BSPT/BSPP/Metric High-Pressure Steel Threaded Fitting, 1/4 BSPP Female x 1/4 NPT Male Adapter (4936K137)

Or you could do this:

$10.36 - Gas Test Gauge (gauge + Schrader valve): http://www.homedepot.com/p/DANCO-0-15-psi-1-10-Increment-Gas-Test-Gauge-94352/100180536
$0.98 - Adapter for above to 1/2" ID tube: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Watts-3-4-in-x-1-2-in-Plastic-Barb-x-MPT-Adapter-A589/202257613

$1.99 - G1/4in. to 1/2in. ID Hose Barb Fitting: http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/xsg1to1bafic.html
$0.41 x 2 : Stainless Steel hose clamps for 5/8" OD tube: http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/hoclbrmi379i.html

$14.94 with a 1' tube from barb fitting to gauge assy.*

* plus shipping of course.

Also, if/when comparing you might want to be careful with McMaster Carr's shipping. I've ordered from them several times myself and shipping was fast but not cheap and I didn't get a choice of shipping options or cost beforehand.

Late edit:
And if you need one:
$5.99 : bicycle pump incl free shipping: http://www.ebay.com/itm/381058545966
