Best possible GPU compatible with my TFX PSU? - Page 2

But for how much longer? That is the question. I do intend to replace the PSU with the new silverstone SFX unit once it comes out (as it will be designed to run silent, unlike the current sfx psus). Hopefully my psu can last a few more months till then. I don't really game heavily on it except when I take it to LAN parties/friend's house, but if I do encounter any problems with it I'll report back.

Which PSU are you waiting for out of curiosity? I have the Silverstone 600w sfx and I can honestly say I have never heard the PSU fan. There is a slight coil whine which quite a few others also have though. I do know a few people from the NCase thread on another forum who have gotten their hands on a SFX - L PSU from Japan. I think they were pleased with the noise.

I think you can run a GM204 card (the 970 and 980), a GK104 card (660Ti, 670, 680, 760, 770), or a Tonga card (R9 285) based on the amps. Less is also possible, such as Pitcairn. wink.gif 348W off the 12V rail should allow for some pretty powerful GPUs. Assuming 100W for a quad-core CPU, you've got about 200W to play with and some overhead. Don't run Furmark too much. Also remember that whatever a kill-a-watt tells you is from the wall. The PSU is going to be inherently inefficient and at best 10% of the power goes to waste. E.g. if you're pulling 300W then the PSU might be outputting between 240W and 270W.

Download HWInfo64 and look at power consumption, core/memory VRM current, voltage and such for your GPU and CPU under a stress test.

If you see figures that your PSU can't really handle, undervolt and underclock your 970 a bit. That 350W PSU can definetly handle an undervolted 970.

The Silverstone SX500-LG, which should be released in the near future - it's got a 120mm slim fan on it instead of an 80mm. The release has been delayed a bit due to them testing it to make it run as quiet as possible, but is estimated for this month/next month.
I did consider getting the 600w one, but from what I've read it's kinda hit and miss as to how much coil whine/fan noise you get. A lot of people complain that it's annoying on idle, and I do want my pc to run silent on idle.

Thanks, will check out how much power it's pulling from the wall soon.

Thanks, will do. I've set the power limit to 90% for the time being, might adjust it a bit once I've measured the figures.

Edit: I have some numbers on wattage from the wall:

Full System Power Consumption (measure from wall - PSU 90% efficient)

Power Limit set to 90% in Afterburner
Prime95 (CPU Only): 110W
Unigine Valley (High GPU + Medium CPU load): 192W
Kombustor Only (High GPU + Medium CPU): 197W
Prime95 + Kombustor (Ridiculous CPU + GPU load): 235W

Power Limit set to 100% in Afterburner
Unigine Valley (High GPU + Medium CPU load): 205W
Kombustor Only (High GPU + Medium CPU load): 213W
Metro Last Light: 205W

Given that the PSU is 90% efficient, that's some pretty low consumption figures for my ITX system. I don't dare to run kombustor for extended periods though tongue.gif

Bit off-topic, but one annoying thing about this card (the gigabyte 970 ITX version) is that the fan doesn't run silent on idle. I might consider returning it for the ASUS Strix model instead, which I only just found out also requires just 1 8-pin connector. Does anyone know if aftermarket VGA coolers fit a 970?

Power figures look good. Just as I said before, you'd be fine. You don't need to get a new PSU unless you get a more demanding GPU or CPU.

HWInfo64 does not tell you anything about power consumption, its also totally useless for reading voltages as its software based.

Just made a new BIOS profile for my card to lower the fan speed below it's manufacturer limit of 33% so it can run silent on idle.

Gotta say I'm really impressed with this card in general, it seems to have that same level of efficiency as my previous card (750 Ti) but with a load of extra horsepower to cope with more demanding games. It is also really good at throttling down clock speeds to meet your set power/temp limit. Even at 85% power limit it still performs really well in most games, and keeps the clock speed to around 865Mhz, also reducing the draw from the power supply so it should be safe to use.

I'm fairly impressed running a nice CPU + GPU on a small PSU like that. GTX970 is an efficient beast.

865mhz? wow tongue.gif

I run mine 1528mhz 24/7 (many people hitting 1550, some even 1600), but on the lowest power limit i can set stock bios (100w) mine still averages over 865mhz.

What do you get on Unigine heaven 4.0 extreme preset? I have ~53fps on minimum power limit (100w) and 84.9fps on 24/7 stable clocks using the benchmark run.

Kepler was really damn efficient when you ran it at ~55-60% of potential 24/7 clock speeds too tongue.gif these things are just a good 60 maybe 70 percent better in an apples to apples test.
