First time overclocking question

Thread Starter
I'm completely new to overclocking so I have some questions

I'm using AI Suite 3. I prefer to do it with this program until I really get the hang of overclocking. Later I can do it via BIOS

I know to increase the core voltage, it should be done in small steps, but what would be considered small?
What else should I increase? I see three options...

1) BCLK frequency
2) Ratio
3) CPU cache ratio

I have a 5960X on an Asus Rampage Extreme V

Start first by adding 0.01 v and gradually go to 0.001 v.Also for a begginer is good just to mess with core multi and voltage.

Good Luck! thumb.gif

Voltage increase should be over .5 increase. for example 1.2v to 1.25 MAX(or lower), not to 1.3v(do not jump that high) especially when you're around 1.3v already. Also before overclocking, target your max Vcore(1.35v) and find how much overclock(core multiplier) you can get, based on your Vcore. If you find stabr as let say 1.35 at your max overclock, start bringing down your Vcore untill you you find instability.

Cache ratio, can be adjusted for stability(raise up or down, in small increments) after an overclock, to get a little bit of performance boost.

Ok...this screenshot shows you what I have so far.

Right now it's running at 4Ghz on the changes I made:

Ratio of 40
I set the BCLK to 110 but it doesn't show 110 except on the OC panel sitting on my desk.

Right now I'm running at 1.151 Core voltage.

Question...core voltage is the same as Vcore, right?

If I set the BCLK to 110, why didn't it change the overclock?

The OC panel shows 110 but according to CPU-Z it's only 100

The BCLK won't be modified so easy if you do software OC.You need to change it from the BIOS in order to make it work properly.

Should I not worry about BCLK for now and just work with the ratio and Vcore?

Yes.You can squeeze a lot of juice just from this simple OC method.

I used AI Suite 3 to try and give my cpu a mild OC and it totally screwed up a bunch of stuff. It would run for a few minutes and then just have a restarting loop of BSOD. I hope you have better luck than I did, any time I do OCing now I will only use the BIOS
