GTX 970 a good choice?

In a few months it will be summer and time to waste Rig money I saved up. I want a GTX 970 really bad. I also would not mind the R9 290 since it only cost $275, But I do not feel like buying a new PSU, And I am sure it may not be a good idea to run a R9 290 off my CX600. But I am a little worried about people reporting coil whine with the 970. I do not want to pay over $300 for a card that will fail in a year or less. I know I have to replace my R9 270, It is still a good card, But with game companies no longer correctly optimizing games. (Ubicrap!) It is going to need to be replaced soon! And I also do not want to fall behind. I am also tired of having a mediocre GPU. What do you guys think? Should I just buy a 970 or bite the bullet and buy a new PSU and the R9 290?

Wait till summer or the time when you're actually going to buy as there will probably either be new cards, or lower price/deals.biggrin.gif But if you're going to be playing a lot of games with ubisoft or games made with nvidia gameworks then nVidia counterpart would be advised.

I have owned both and if its an issue of having to buy a new psu then I would definitely purchase the 970. I appreciated my 290s, but I didn't care for AMDs drivers/software and hated the noise that the card produced.

I hear you on AMD's drivers! I never once had a driver issue with my 650 TI, But since I got my R9 270 I have had to stay with Catalyst driver 14.4 And it kinda worries me that AMD may get worse. However I do think AMD has nicer colors. I don't know It is like choosing between two hot chicks, The nice typical blonde, Or the nice tan brunette with fantastic legs. Not easy to choose!

A 600 W PSU is more than enough to run a single 290. If you're in the market for a new card right now, get a 970. It's an efficient card that runs quiet, cool and performs great. All 970s seem to have a bit of coil whine, but it's usually not bad as you can see in this video. Buy from a retailer with good service, so you can return it in case of bad coil whine.

If you're still a few months away from a purchase, then there's not much anyone can recommend at this point. AMD is expected to release new cards at some point and NVIDIA might follow with GM200 (bigger and more expensive cards than the 970/980). The 970 might be cheaper by then.

So far the 970 has been an INCREDIBLE card for me. Technologically the best card I've owned. Overclocks great, low temps (~50c in games and ~60c in benchmarks), low noise. Highly advised based on what I've *read about AMD's noisy and less reliable counterparts.

*No, I don't believe EVERYTHING I read on the internet. Just OCN, Tom's and Guru. thumb.gif
