At this point power efficiency is going to take a backseat to die size. All of these new GPUs are becoming extremely advanced for 28nm. GM204's die size of 398mm2 is significantly higher than GK104's 294mm2. When these monster second generation (at least for 28nm) enthusiast dies come out, we might be looking at ~600mm2 die sizes.

HBM is supposed to have power efficiency improvements. That and Tonga improved efficiency through a better GCN I believe.

Hard to use Tonga to judge efficiency when it also had reduced bus to 256bits and VRAM from 3GB to 2GB
post #34 of 150
Pretty sure Tonga was only a laptop/Mac/etc play. Tahiti reworked with the express purpose of efficiency, some new gimmicks (colour compression) also though. You could compare against 256bit 2GB Tahiti?

Besides AA, what exactly "isnt needed" at 4K? Some of us still like to have max settings and a high frame rate.

As far as the 20nm stuff goes, I really can't understand why AMD would go this long between flagships if they're just putting out another 28nm gpu. I mean really, it would be pointless. If AMD wanted to do another 28nm GPU it would have been released already. If they've sat on the 290X for this long, it's because they're waiting for 20nm.

I was referring to AA mostly. However crap that should be turned off at any resolution (DoF, Motion Blur) counts as well.

This might beat the 290x by about 15% at best....20% if lucky....maybe edge out the 980....
