Looking for suggestions/comments on my 1st intel build

Thread Starter
It's been 4 years since my last build, so it's about time for a new one. I've decided to go with intel this time. I'm looking for any input on what dumb choices I may have made or where I should change things up a bit.

The goal is a PC that will do some adult gaming (Evil Within, Far Cry 4), but mostly picture/video editing and games for the kids (Wizard101). I'd like to go dual-monitor down the road as well.

I like the idea of a black & white color scheme, which explains a lot of the choices.
I plan on trying for ~4.4GHz on the 4690k. Seems like the cooler will be more than able to get me there.
SSD for boot + some games, 3TB for normal install space + dont-care data. 2 1TB's will be RAID1 for family pics/videos/important data.
Video card is probably overkill, but should future-proof me for a while? Maybe I should just drop back a tier?
I like the idea of the silent case.
I have no clue on the monitor. Seems like anything with <5ms would be fine, I pretty randomly picked one with speakers.

Would like to also keep it all under $1700.

CPU Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core $219.88
CPU Cooler Phanteks PH-TC14PE 78.1 CFM $59.99
Motherboard MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition ATX LGA1150 $125.99
Memory Kingston Fury White Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 $144.99
Storage Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" SSD $123.87
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM $53.97
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM $53.97
Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM $99.98
Video Card EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB Superclocked ACX 2.0 $339.99
Case Fractal Design Define R4 w/Window (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower $79.99
Power Supply EVGA 750W ATX12V / EPS12V $79.99
Optical Drive Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer $16.98
Operating System Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit) $89.98
Monitor ViewSonic VX2452mh 23.6" $176.35

Total: $1665.92

Plus some generic keyboard/mouse combo.

Current pcpartpicker list.

Does this seem like a decent combo so far?

Everything's looks great. Only thing I would change would be the storage. 5TB of HDD storage is usually way more than most consumers would need, but only you can judge that for yourself. I would probably lower the HDD storage by a $100 and either use that money to get more ssd storage or a better monitor.

Also, budget for some good case fans. The r4 comes with two, you,ll want to add a 3rd at bare minimum or replace all 3 for something better. The Fractal r2 fans are pretty quiet, but don't move a lot of air.

Nice looking parts list.

Edit: Make sure the EVGA power supply is either the G2 or B2 model. They are much better than the originals.

Which EVGA SuperNova is that one you picked? if its not the B2 or G2 you need to pick something else.
If you are never going SLI its way overkill a 450 watts could power that system as it is now.

If its for gaming you dont need 16 GB of RAM.

It's the EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply.
Part # 120-G1-0750-XR

I figured overpower was better than underpower. But I see your point - pcpartpicker has it listed as being just under 400W right now. I would probably never do SLI, so I'll look at what other 600W options there are. Also,it's the G1 and not the B2/G2 model you were mentioning, so I will do some research on those as well. Thanks!

I plan to do some video editing on this and will run virtual machines for linux environments. So I figured the 16GB couldn't hurt.

I might dial back the storage - need to see how much space the kids' movies take up. All are ripped to harddrives as mkv's but take up a ton of space. I do want to keep 2 1TB's in RAID1 to protect the family pics/vids though.

Here's the current pcpartpicker list.

And I guess I need to do some more research on what is a decent 24" monitor. It needs mediocre speakers for the kids, and I'll just use headphones.

I'll look into getting a matching 3rd fan for the case as well. Thanks for the tip!

If you are going to do some video editing, I would keep the 16 GB of ram. When you send $1600 on a build, the $65 for the additional ram is a small piece of the pie.

I would also look for the EVGA G2 power supply. The price is similar and it should be pretty easy to find from most vendors. The problem is that there are still a lot of Nex and original g models around and most people are unaware that EVGA switched PSU manufacturers and quality went up significantly.

Its also a good idea in my opinion, to stick with at least a 600 watt unit. That way you have enough power for anything you may want to add or upgrade in the machine down the road. When a PSU can last several years, you never know what your computer desires will be in the future and the cost difference over the smaller unit is small given the scope of your build.

I'll read that thread on the G1 issues (thanks!) and will see what the price ranges are for the G2's.

I did see these supplies that are white and might look nice in the case, but need to look up whether or not they suck. Only in 550W or 700W.

NZXT HALE82 V2 550W 550W ATX 12V V2.31 & EPS 12V V2.92 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply (Haswell Support)

NZXT HALE82 V2 700W 700W ATX 12V V2.31 & EPS 12V V2.92 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply (Haswell Support)

Will try to find fans/PSU/monitor choices tonight after the kids are down.

Thread Starter
Wow. Looks like I have some reading to do in the power supplies forum. Hopefully I'll find a list of recommended sub-$100 PSUs.

I see a corsair ax760 for $115 on pcpartpicker. Hopefully I can find something fully modular to cut down on cable clutter.
But if I'm gonna do that, may as well go with EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 for about the same price?

Found your thread here which pretty much sums it up - 750 G2 is the way to go.

I'll do some reading up and update my part list to see where I'm at.

Thanks!

That's a lot of reading. You probably just want a decent power supply. Here is a nice data base to look at. It's in a chart form and shows most of the power supply brands, who makes the unit, and to the right are any review scores they've received. You can also click on any score and it takes you to the site that did the review.

In my opinion, start with Seasonic and Antec, most of their units are good. I wouldn't spend an absurd amount of time if you're not into power supply tech. If you choose a unit from a brand you recognize, reference a few reviews, you'll be just fine. Most of the power supplies that the enthusiasts on this forum avoid are just mediocre, but will work fine. They should last many years, they're not going to catch fire, and they are very unlikely to give you any trouble. They're just mediocre, run of the mill units that get sold in great quantities and most people use them without issue. Myself and others on this forum are enthusiasts and pour through reviews and choose the best unit we can find. But that kind of time commitment and excitement isn't for everyone.

Like I said, Seasonic and Antec are usually good. Reference a review or two to make sure that particular unit is fine and you should be all set. If you want units that I would start looking at first, are easy to find at most retailers, and easy to find reviews:

Seasonic G-Series is found everywhere.
Antec High Current Lines and True Power Lines are easy to find.
Rosewill Capstone
EVGA G2 and B2 models.

Edit: The Corsair AX 760 you found is a good unit...
