How do I improve my WiFi signal?

Thread Starter
I live in a house, but with neighbors on the other side of the walls. We all have our own WiFi network, and I fear that might be the problem. I seem to have horrible signal to my router, even though it's just upstairs and only 20 meters away. Sometimes I even drop out of the signal completely. My router is a Asus RT-N 56U and it's updated. What can I do?

Have you tried turning your router some?

It's likely omnidirectional, but it's possible that you're just sitting in a dark spot.

I'd assume you're router is also choosing the best channel to use automatically.

It leaves me to question your host receiver. Is your signal dropping out with a laptop?

I can try and put it another place. I've set it to channel 1,since I keep getting the best signal there, and when I scan the other routers, then they aren't using that channel. My signal is dropping out with my HTPC, phone and tablet.

Okay that's good to know so we can cross off the posibility that it's a specific NIC issue.

See if you have the ability to control your router's signal range. Make sure it's at max if you can.

May need to relocate your router otherwise or get a repeater. Could be something structural in the way.

I was about ready to suggest getting a repeater/range extender.

Alternatively, you could get a really nice router like an AC1900. Thing is a beast.

I've had wonderful luck pairing up two routers with dd-wrt on them and using the repeater bridge on one of them. right now I have an older netgear WNDR3300 and I get a signal over 500 feet away with the Tx power to about 100 mW inside the firmware. Albeit, it's rather weak, but it does work.

I would hate to replace the router, since I just bought it last summer. Heres a couple of pictures of WiFi signal. The screenshots are taken from a phone with the WiFi analyzer app.
Picture 1 is downstairs in my house.
Picture 2 is downstairs in my parents house, which is completely identical to my house. Their router is placed at almost the same location as mine, but its a different router.
Picture 3 is taken 1½ meters from my router.

Almost sounds as if your wireless is flaking out on that router considering at not even 3 M away you don't get full signal.

I have no idea what the problem is. The firmware is updated, I've reset the router multiple times. I cant try a new position for the router right now because of the cable setup, but still, it shouldnt be so bad at 1½ meters away.
