4350 or 6300?

Thread Starter
Currently I am on Athlon X3 455 with MSI 970 Gaming mobo with AC Frezer A30 cooler.
They cost the same (3€ are between them) but the 4350 has higher clocks out of the box on the other hand it has less cores.
6300 has more cores and lower clock out of the box but it should be able to reach 4,2 GHz easily enough. I had the 6300 before and it run at 4,3 GHz without any problems.
Is it possible that I could reach higher frequency with the 4350? This is mainly a gaming rig and games will benefit more from the increased clock speed than from the 6 cores at lower speed.
What are your experiences with overclocking this CPUs? Which one you think I should get?

Get the 6300 recent games can use more than 4 cores and ocing helps aswell but in games that need singlethread better a higher frequency but amd isnt good for singlethread

6300 isn't that hard to OC on a decent board, 4350 might go a bit higher.

If you mostly play games where you feel your cpu single thread performance is holding you back you might consider a g3258 and OC that.

If you game games that need more than 2 cores, then you might as well get the 6 core for supreme multi core performance. (edit: or want to do some sort of heavy multitasking stuff)

g3258 vs 4350 are very close in multicore performance at same clocks. (at least in the ~4 thread range c;)

edit: I rather appreciate this chart http://www.overclock.net/t/1493307/relative-access-to-execution-throughput-comparison-chart

edit: also just throwing that out there but a great deal of games run perfectly fine on AMD with a little OC, if you game on 60hz monitor, even the most poorly coded games. unless it's an MMO where 100 dudes stand around on the same spot, and the game uses 1 thread only. Or Arma3. Though these would still be playable.

Unlock the 455 and call it a day, or stretch your cash when you can and go FX8***.

I have the x3 445 in my son's rig running as an x4 propus @ 3.6 (limited by the board's non-cooled VRM's)

It does surprisingly well with a 7950. Not sure if the MSI 970 has ACC or any other features capable of unlocking the chip though, I would assume so.....

The 6300 would also be a decent CPU for you too, but the 4 actual cores (if you can use them all) on your x3, will destroy a 4350 since those chips use 2 modules, with two less efficient "semi-cores" on each module.

The 6300 would be my choice. If your budget was a smidge more, consider an 8320. If not, the 6300 would be ideal.

6300 for sure lol. I've had a few of these chips and I think it's the best AMD has to offer overall.
