Trying to fix the HD 5850 stock fan

From time to time the fan on my Asus HD 5850 starts making loud annoying noises. It's an old GPU and therefore I bet it's in need of some lubrication. I've been reading around and I think I might be able to fix it, but I have no idea if I should use oil or grease, and what should I look for in each one. I've read a lot of contradictory information on the subject and it's getting a bit confusing. All I know is that I shouldn't use WD-40 since it might eat through the plastic.

Also what kind of thermal paste should I get? Do I have to worry about conductivity? All I ever used was the Artic Céramique. Edit: Figured this one out. Since I'm not comfortable enough I'm going to get something that isn't conductive. Looking at prices right now.

And finally, when I remove the stock cooler will I have any problem reinstalling the backplate? Almost every guide I found on the subject dismantled the hd 5850 to install a new cooler so I have no idea on what to expect here. Last time I did something like this was for my Pentium 4 so I'm a bit rusty tongue.gif

Thanks but I decided to go with oiling it instead since it's pretty much the same steps except instead of just swapping them out I need to open the fan and oil it. Overall oiling it up ends up saving me both time (the only decent priced fans on ebay take a month to arrive) and money (I'm also going to try and fix a case fan before replacing it).

Didn't realize that oiling it would end up being so futile... Since this card might end up going for a second machine I better just open the wallet.
