Every pixel of this UI has been meticulously placed in order to confuse and scare as few morons as humanly possible.

I'm honestly flabbergasted. What do you guys like? Would it really take a Windows 7 re-release for you to feel safe again?
It's not about performance. There are plenty of new window movement effects, and the hardware acceleration is still in full effect. It's about the style. This is what our culture has decided looks good in this day and age. Personally, I think Vista looks almost laughably terrible with its faux-glass shininess and 90% opacity drop shadows. But that's just my opinion thumbsupsmiley.png

It's just people who don't like the flat crap.
I'm a skeuomorphism lover myself, the flat designs are freaking tasteless. Makes the whole experience so dry, if you know what I mean.
As I said before I don't really care what W10 looks like, I'll be slapping a custom skin on it anyways. I don't like flat.

Isn't that the strategy Ubisoft used for character design in Assassins Creed Unity? Go for the safest possible design?

Other than making buttons monotone, there's really nothing wrong with it. It looks like the same style microsoft has been putting into it's software for a while now.

edit: I used to work at a place where eclipse had a purple icon... I kept clicking it when I wanted Visual Studio. Monotone is annoying, especially when you want the small size task bar.

It *used* to be about performance. Like when upgrading from a 386sx25 to a 386dx40 was considered a really nice upgrade... back when I started running raided ultra scsi on a dedicated card just to get back 7 or 8 percent of my processor cycles back... I know it's not about performance now and that's why it's ridiculous. The performance gain getting rid of my opacity and drop shadows is negligible.

If I have to sit here and stare at it, I'd rather it not look like the bleak reflection of a bland cubicle. It's not that I even have my desktop personalized or anything but I've grown accustomed to having things look pretty and taking a step back to fulfill the retro vibe for the hipsters working at microsoft trying to oversimplify everything.... umm. No thanks.

I agree.

It's ironic that on the gaming front we have never had so many options and new features like tessellation and global illumination and games are looking better and better all the time. Meanwhile GUIs are going backwards. I wouldn't have a problem with it if there was an option to bring back Aero. Again, in this age of multicore CPUs with lots of multimedia extensions to speed up stuff, powerful GPUs, even the built-in ones (for this kind of task anyway), and where software is more and more fully featured, we can't get Microsoft to provide an option to use the UI style of the most popular version of Windows.

And then there's the talk of skeuomorphism. It doesn't have to be an all or nothing talk either. Apple went much further in that regard, and in my opinion it's a bit dated to have a notebook application that actually looks like a physical notebook, with fake leather decorations and lines on the paper. That is aesthetical skeuomorphism. Windows Vista and 7 never went that far. What we have is 3D effects, or functional skeuomorphism, where buttons and scroll bars can be clearly identified, where windows have shadows, you know, stuff that is actually useful to help identify where to click and where stuff is.

Yes! An updated version of Aero is just what Windows 10 needs.
