PS4/Gaming on a UHD 4k TV

Thread Starter
so i get the keys to my new house in couple weeks and planning on getting a new TV. i've already settled on 65" and was thinking of grabbing one of the 4k models.

things is, while i do watch movies and some TV, mostly i play PS4 and some other console games. after doing some research though, appears like this is a bad idea to get a 4k TV due to some serious input lag. i play all sorts of games, but at the moment im mainly addicted to Destiny. so yeah i like fast action packed shooters and other games similar. also sports games like FIFA and eventually when one is worth getting, racing game.

is 4k a bad idea for me?

while i respect all opinions on money value, this is not what this thread is about. just to put it out there, im not asking if the cost and value is really worth it, i can afford either its not the drama. my only concern is, if going to get 4k will it have any adverse affect on my gaming?

cheers guys

Well, input lag will be an issue as you said and ghosting might also be worse on UHD. Then there's the lack of content. You might also suffer from bad upsampling with some devices. While UHD is actually pretty good for FHD upsampling, as you can use nearest-neighbor interpolation which retains all detail in the original picture, some devices might use smoothing algorithms which will affect the image sharpness.

UHD will never improve your experience in a FHD game and the PS4 doesn't support UHD gaming so a UHD TV will always result in a similar or worse experience than a FHD TV in PS4 games. At best you can get the same gaming experience and a better movie experience, but that requires that the whole input lag/ghosting issue is fixed.

I still think you should consider how expensive and limited UHD is right now and how much better and cheaper it will become. By the time UHD has matured, the TVs will be much cheaper and better. New HDMI/DP standards will improve refresh rates and input lag will decrease. I think it would be better to choose what's great now, FHD, and then upgrade to UHD 5 years down the line.
