$500 Intel vs AMD Same budget shootout - 8350 @ 4.5ghz +R290 vs 4670k @ 4.4 ghz + 280x

I have ordered my wifey build (see sig) which is very comparable to my HTPC/Gamer (8350 build). The parts should be here by the end of the week. The builds should be close in terms of cost. I will be reinstalling a fresh copy of win 7 x64 pro on both systems (the 8350 has over a year windows install). I priced a 8320 since they both perform similar and 4.5 is about guaranteed on both chips.

The FX8 cpu can be had for as little as $80 (8310 @ Tigerdirect) and the cheapest i5 4440 is $170. Thats $100 difference in the cpu alone. Taking the price difference you can get a much better gpu with the FX8 for gaming.

Here is a FX8 @ 4.5 + R290 vs 4670k @ 4.4 + 280x. Both systems should be close in cost.

Exact Game Settings on both platforms
Tests done at 1680x1050 22" monitor
No PhysX in any test
GPU at stock clocks
8350 @ 4.5
4670k @ 4.4
Summary of Results as of 1-16-2015

Per multiple requests here is a i5 4440 (4670k @ 3.3 ghz) + R290 vs FX8 @ 4.5 + R290

Conclusion:

The FX8 + R290 consistently beats the i5 + 280x. The intel fans stating that AMD are terrible and slow and a i3 is better than a FX6/FX8 is clearly not true. Both CPU have moderate overclocks which anyone can obtain and the FX8 beats the i5 while costing $50-150 less. There is never a good reason to get a i5 over a FX8. In games the FX8 + better gpu (the price differnece) is faster and in encoding the extra cores will make the fx8 a better deal. I would personally either get a i7 if I wanted ultimate performance or a FX8/FX6 instead of the i3/i5 for people on a budget.

Added locked i5 4440 (4670k @ 3.3) + R290 benchmark per popular demand
i5 4440 3.3 ghz (simulated using 4670k @ 3.3 ghz) vs FX8 4.5 ghz both using stock clocked R290

I still fail to see the i5 4440 "kill" the AMD fx8 and would gladly do some benching using handbrake or Sony Vegas to prove the FX8 @ 4.5 vs i5 4440 is a better option. Sorry I'll take the cheaper FX8 and add a better GPU

Planetside 2 maybe? It's a very CPU heavy game, and it's free. Not easy to bench consistently though.

The Starswarm Mantle benchmark is good too, and it's free on steam. It's designed to be CPU heavy, so it'll be good for this test.

I prefer in game benches instead of fraps. Feel it will be more consistent

Sub'd

i would like to see bf4 mp benched even if its on empty maps for a controlled sample.

Mantle and directx
1080p ultra settings no AA.

I expect the unigine benchmarks will favor the stronger gpu even if you disabled 4 cores of the 8320.

Every time someone suggests a AMD cpu the intel people drone on about how bad AMD is. I will find out first hand by the end of the week when all my wife's components arrive.

Technically in pure price the 8320 competes with a i3. I priced a 8320 because my friend's 8320 overclocked as well as my 8350 on lower volts and out scored me on cinebench 15 at equal clocks

I own bf4 so I may try to do something. I know you can use afterburner or fraps for in game benches, though i've never done it before.

last I checked fraps wouldn't work with 64bit games (bf4). It might now though.

Be sure to show min fps in results please.

Also would be cool to see both cpu with the 290 and both with 280x in a few benches.

How do you measure the mins and maxes. What software?

I could but the point is the increase cost of the i5 leaves less money for a gpu in budget builds.
