Quick Question Regarding SLI

Thread Starter
Hello all, I'm very new here and would like to introduce myself formally first.

I currently have a Gigabyte GTX 760 Windforce OC Edition and I plan on going with an SLI configuration in the next week or so. Should I order the same card again or would it be alright to order another GTX 760 from a different manufacturer?

This is what I currently own.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125556

this is what I'm considering pairing it with if possible.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=14-500-312

My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD7 TH but I may swap it out for an Asus Maximus 7 Hero soon as well

Thanks, I'll probably do that. What about any experience with SLI in a Hackintosh?

The heat output of my 290 will never convince me to get 2x of them in my h440(which is a close case as well), Nvidia GPUs has proven to run cooler but still, dual GPUs in that case will increase your temps a bit higher than normal.

Speaking from my experience, with my side panel open(nzxt h440) my gpu max temps is 69C, when I close the side panel, I can get as high as 80C depending on how long I play the game for. That's just an idea of what to expect from a compact case like the "Hackintosh".

my single card idles at 32c and bench marking with Aida64 it stayed between 55-60c at 100% loads but usually runs cooler during gaming. I also have 2 Corsair SP120's blowing on my PCI area of my Mobo that when spinning ~1k rpm dropped the temps another 6-12c, along with 2 more SP 120's blowing air from the front things stay pretty cool in my case. Though cable management sucks I may go with a larger case soon. I just noticed with single monitor 1080p gaming I can play most games maxed out or close and still get decent 55-70fps on average but with newer games like AC Unity it tends to only be comfortable around medium settings. But the GTX 760 is supported by Yosemite out of the box and some benchmarks I've seen place 2 GTX 760's in SLI pretty close to a single GTX Titan

this ^

But it also works when you add a second one from another brand.

As long as the chip (GTX 760) is the same, it's fine.

Take the GTX 780 as example. You can do 780 + 780, but NOT 780 + 780Ti (different chip)

IIRC you could even have 2x 760 but one has 1GB and the other has 2GB --> result will be that the 2GB will be "limited" to also 1GB for working on par with the 1GB card

IIRC you could even have 2x 760 with different clockspeeds that works fine. (and if you overclock them they both have the same speed wink.gif )

But if you can find/affort an identical it is probably the best in terms of non-conflicting thumb.gif

so essentially if i bought a 4Gb card it'd be restricted to 2 because the other card has 2? That makes sense I guess, I've never ran SLI/Crossfire configs before so I'm not that familiar with them. Also at this point I don't think $10 will break the bank, I'm also looking at adding a second monitor which having more than 2Gb of VRAM is just about essential for.

I suggested same GPUs sli because most GPU manufactures does not make their GPUs with the same clock speeds and memory clock speeds, this means the GPU with the lower specs will hold things back a bit, than if they were identical. With dual monitors you should make up to a total of 4GB VRAM or more, for better experience.

It'd be cool to be able to dedicate a certain portion of DRAM to VRAM but DDR3 is not as fast as GDDR5 and would probably bottleneck things a little bit.

Oh yeah, that was something I forgot OP wink.gif

If you SLi 2x a 2GB card, it stays 2GB so it does NOT add up (4GB)
