Quick Question Regarding SLI - Page 2

Thread Starter
So SLI 2 2Gb cards does not equal 4Gb? But you get 2x the GPU? Then if that's the case there doesn't really seem to be a point to SLI if everything is not improved, might as well fork out an extra $150 and get a 970 G1 Gaming..

So as far as Performance Per Dollar what would be the best single graphics card then, I'd like to have at least 4Gb of VRam and at least 256bit but less than $400, but I don't know what would be good to go with. I guess now since I know the VRam doesn't add together then my GTX 760 will go into my wife's machine.

Don't worry much about dual GPU vram add up, it's about the overall compute performance of the GPU not necessarily higher vram. You can buy a low end GPU with 4gb VRAM but since the compute performance is low, it will not excel in games. 2GB vram is good already for 2x monitors and depending on how strong that 2GB vram GPU is (compute performance), gamimg will excel, adding another GPU just increases the compute performance of the overall GPU which is the most important thing, not VRAM is.

Gaming demands hasn't really moved on that much and depending on how you customize your game settings, adding another gtx 760 will be cheaper and will out perform any reasonably priced single GPU out there!

2GB is indeed enough for most stuff.

SLi is more for playing physx like games... one card calculates the graphics, the other one the physx...

Tho it just add's up the total data and divide it over the 2 GPU's

Search for "sli scaling" to see how well a setup of 2, 3 or 4 cards scale.

You'll see that 2 cards is sweet spot in most cases. (price per dollar wise)

and you're correct about the 256-bit bus... IMO more bits is better, even better than faster GPU's

imagine it as a road with cars.

You can have a car that drives 100Mph and 3 road lanes so that's like 300Mph data per cycle wink.gif
Or you can have a slower car like 80Mph but more road lanes like 4 or so, so that per cycle it moves more data (320Mph)

As long as the chipset is the same you should be fine going with another brand, but it's always the same bet going with the same model card always. In my personal experience. You'll enjoy the performance boost. You should see numbers higher than the original Titan.

Not true.

Note: It used to be possible to enable SLI on cards with differing VRAM but this is no longer available.

Well... "IIRC" and "could even have" are things from the past wink.gif

And what does the note say? --> It used to be possible in the past

I had GTX470's in those days when it was possible...

Just have my 780Ti's for a month or so... biggrin.gif

So in my memory I was correct! But it's good to know it is not working anymore now thumb.gif

well I've been looking at a 4Gb GTX 970 G1 Gaming but it's close to $400, I do currently run a 2 screen setup.. kind of, I play BF4 on my 46" 1080p TV and use a 22" Dell monitor under it for Battlescreen, but that's really about it. The size difference is too vast to do much else with it currently. But I would like to eventually go with a 3 monitor setup for iRacing or Project Cars soon, or maybe even War Thunder. But more VRam would help with things like render distance and detail, unless I'm wrong about that. Games like Far Cry 4 and AC Unity that have a far viewing area definitely eat more VRam it seems where as games like BF4 where it's a lot of close proximity rendering seem to use less but the GPU is stressed more processing the explosions and impacts in those sort of games.
