How good is SLI?

More specifically for the GTX 970 series.

I'v had crossfire before with 7970's and my brother has crossfire 7870's and I swore I'd never go multiple GPUs again. Frame pacing, stutter, no support on tons of games... I told myself I would never waste money like that again because the performance gains were good, but to my eyes all I saw was FPS lag which doesn't make sense. Single card at 40FPS looked better than constant 60FPS with crossfire in nearly every game I played.

But after using this Nvidia 970 for the last month (my first Nvidia card) I can tell how much better games run on Nvidia in general without tons of stuttering in games like Watch Dogs and FarCry 4. Does the SLI work as good as single GPU configurations? I really want that extra little bit to hit that 60 FPS on my 5760 x 1080 but I'm not willing to do it if it's anything like crossfire.

So for those who have tried both crossfire and SLI or those who are sensitive to frame timings / pacing, stutter ect...How does SLI look to you? I don't mean FPS numbers, but how smooth it is to the human eye regardless of actual FPS?

Recent software updates are improving dual GPU support. Shuttling is a normal glitch, when it comes do dual cards, it's a possibility, but the 970 scaling improvements(software as important) could see you experiencing less or no shuttling, as long as you're in the monitors refresh rate zone.

I've only experienced AMDs in crossfire, but from what I've experienced, the stuttering is minimal - still slightly noticeable but not enough to distract you from the game. It's definitely worth using over a single card with lower settings imo. My gut feeling tells me that 970s in SLI would have even less stuttering than my 290s though I'm not sure.

I was using 7970 crossfire until little over a month ago, and the stuttering was still bad enough for me to shut off the second card most of the time. After the Omega drivers failed to deliver any changes I moved onto Nvidia to try as an upgrade instead of 290x. It's one of those things allot of people do not notice, but it drives me insane.

Stuttering still exists in SLI. I get it at times in games, hard to pin point what is causing it though...

Ok thanks for the info. I think I'll just avoid it then.

It may not be noticeable to you, depends on games and setup too. I have noticed in a few I play though.

OP, I have run SLi in every system I have ever built and the only problems I have experienced where when the game settings where to high for the system. You should have no problem running a SLi setup in that rig.

Single GPUs will loose their value pretty soon.
There is always going to be pros and cons, even with a single GPU, there are possibilities of shuttering&Screen tearing. SLI, is cheaper and worth every penny if the application if it hits it well. And unless you need more fps to feed your higher resolution or refresh rate, any mid range GPU is more than enough. That's why I said earlier that, games demands has not really moved on and even a modern high performance single GPU will struggle with every single setting maxed in any advanced game.

i have had SLI configs 580SLI/670 SLI/780SLI and now 980 SLI. I can say for the games I play stuttering is a non issue as long as nvidia has a good SLI profile for the game as not all games support SLI.
