Another way to test your pagefile and memory leaks is to time how long it takes to crash and once you have crashed try to replay the same mission, or do the same things up to your crash. Memory leaks are pretty common, it really just depends how big they are and increasing your pagefile size will typically just delay how long you go in between crashes.

When I first began playing the game on launch day, my overclocks—for both GPU and CPU—that were stable for everything else were blue screening for GTA. I duly decreased them and BSOD went away. Then this D3D error began appearing occasionally. Then it began appearing almost every session. For other people they can't even play for ten minutes without the game crashing. I can at least play for 45 minutes or more. I am currently playing the game with no additional overclocks, but with a modified BIOS that allows the card to boost by itself to 1455Mhz. The only parameters changed in the BIOS are power limits, thermal threshold, and voltage table. The BIOS is set to restrict boost to 1455Mhz, which is what I'm currently playing GTA at. I previously had Afterburner boosting the card to 1510/7600Mhz. Now I'm at 1455/7010Mhz, or basically stock.

I am very inexperienced with pagefile. I will be looking into it. The crashes appear to be random. The only consistency is at what point during the game they appear, which is almost always after a mission is ended and I am waiting for the next mission/screen.
I suggest putting the original bios back on your GTX 970 the manufacturer probably knew more about the real limitations of the card than you then also raise your pagefile to 8gb as minimum and 16gb as maximum then retry your gaming sessions I bet this resolves the issue.

I say the thing about the bios because there is a reason why they limit the boost and once the card pulls over a certain power limit and gets into a certain temp threshhold outside of original specs something could have become just a bit unstable whether Vram side or GPU itself side is unknown or elsewhere on the card but it was limited for a reason.

I will also say a D3D error meens the graphics driver crashed more than likely this is often caused from a instability in a overclock or something have dealt with this in the past PLZ put original bios back on the card and up the pagefile just for safe measure and try again.

They likely limited the boost upto a specific load for a reason thru the bios to combat a stability issue or to keep the card from straining a component which causes a crash which would almost always result in a D3D error.

I will further test the game without any overclocks and this new driver. If that fails I will consider increasing the pagefile and/or flashing the original BIOS. However, that would be a very frustrating thing to do as it does not correlate with the experiences of others. Not to mention the fact that the modified BIOS helped stabilize the card in other titles. 1455Mhz boost is a common sight to see for a G1 Gaming so I can't see how boosting to there is going to destabilize one specific game. We'll see how I get on today. I will play the game as much as possible over the next two weeks. If I don't crash, I will bring the overclocks back. If the crashes return, I'll know it was the overclocks. If they don't, I'll know it was the new driver from nVidia that fixed it.

Game crashed after about an hour and a half, right after the mission ended waiting for the next one to begin (the normal place). No overclocks. Gonna try my old BIOS, I guess. But I still think this issue is down to Rockstar and/or nVidia, not the GPU. There are just too many people with vastly different systems all experiencing the same problem. I'll try increasing the pagefile first, actually.

Food for thought do you not see this happening with the GTX 970 in some way shape or form.

People keep saying this, and it keeps not being true.

Using a quick sample of Techpowerup's reviews here's what I found by comparing 3 games (BF4, Metro:LL, and Watchdogs) over three reviews (Jul 14, Oct 14, and Mar 15). Here's the results:

BF4 (Jul 14, Oct 14, May 15)

290X - 45, 48, 48
780Ti - 48, 48, 52
980 - xx, 53, 58

Metro:LL

290X - 49, 49, 55
780Ti - 52, 52, 56
980 - xx, 56, 58

Watchdogs

290x - 50, 50, 54
780 Ti - 51, 51, 55
980 - xx, 57, 63

The 780 Ti is still neck and neck with the 290X in GTA5 also.

OKay then why does Nvidia gameworks make GTX titan only get 30 fps on witcher 3 yet a GTX 960 gets like 40fps+ do the math here what is going on if that isn't Nvidia gimping keplar then what is going on and why here is proof and a good post / thread to read http://www.overclock.net/t/1556367/wccf-witcher-3-benchmarked-gtx-titan-does-30fps-at-1080p-and-ultra-settings#post_23926544 even a R9 270x is nearing a GTX titans performance by only 6fps under it this says Nvidia is gimping keplar and anything under 900 series / titan X is being falsely tampered / gimped.

Still defending nvidia after 970 fiasco and may be kepler issues.

Everyone whom owned and still own a 700 series, including me immediately noticed the distinction when maxwell released.

I've noticed a decline in the performance of Keplar, but I still believe they're more than capable of playing modern games.

I remember when the 970 and 980 had just been released in Autumn last year. There were so many threads with "Should I buy a second 770 or sell my current one and buy a 970/980?" So many were suggesting the two 770's route. Then Unity came out and it all went to pot. No SLI support, 4GB of VRAM required, optimized for the Maxwell, etc.

i faced performance issues with 780. its high end gpu still facing fps drop in certain games like GTA V, dying light etc. i dont know why is it so. but i think this is waht NVIDIA already done lowering performance of kepler through Drivers and increases performance and stability of MAxwell more optimized in gaming.

NVIDIA is leaning towards Maxwell, latest benchmarks of Witcher 3 showing even 770 falling behind 960. and it is close to 780.purpose behind is NVIDIA wants all gamers to switch to Maxwell setup ............... totally business.

But Maxwell is supposed to be a newer and much superior architecture. Just because raw clock/bandwidth numbers still make the Kepler cards look good doesn't mean they shouldn't lose to newer cards. It doesn't have to be driver bull****. There can be some of that too but I honestly seriously doubt nvidia would abandon the Kepler cards so soon. Back in Kepler days I managed to get them to fix a performance bug with a GTX 275 on an indie game (Mount & Blade), according to you guys that's something nvidia would never do - but they did do it.

Deliberately lowering performance through drivers for the Keplar generation of GPU's is purely speculative and isn't a fair statement to make, in my opinion, even if it's true. The 780 is two years old. What is more likely is that the games we are seeing recently were designed with a new different technology in mind, and previous generations have been sadly ignored in place of Maxwell.

It's misleading to say they are deliberately lowering performance, cause that's not the case at all. Performance on older games either hasn't changed or has improved, within margin of error. Newer games simply aren't being optimized as well as Maxwell, which is too be expected, granted its fairly soon for that. I'm not so sure there wont be slower Kepler enhancements down the line, still.
