Yeah, I should have mentioned it but SpaceEngine doesn't support SLI yet. My second card shows 0% usage in that screenshot, that's how it always is in the game. I'll try manually disabling it and trying SpaceEngine again later. Should I just set it to "single GPU" in the control panel or remove the SLI Bridge as well?

Disabling it in the control panel enough. You an also force it to use your secondary card only by moving the monitor cables to the secondary GPU. I got slightly different ram usage between two different cards.

Had your suspension, you mean you've lost it?!

No, no , no. This is not good. This is not good at all.

well i stopped checking since i don't game much anymore, but before when i game heavily i always noticed my vram doesn't exceed 3.5gb in watchdogs and couple other titles

Yeah, not doing any better with SLI manually disabled. I've got SpaceEngine gasping for VRAM (keeps hanging up and freezing temporarily during camera movement, prolonged stuttering), yet it just won't use more than 3.5 GBs. It might be different for other games, but this is the one I needed it for most. mad.gif

There is absolutely nothing in TopicClocker's post that contrasts what I think. I've never claimed 970s can't use all 4 GBs of their VRAM, which I know is the argument you might think I'm trying to make, but rather that for some reason, they're treating 512 MBs of it differently and try not to access it if they can avoid it. As I said in my Skyrim post, in extreme conditions, I forced it to break through and use my 970s' full framebuffer and I noticed some temporary usage of the extra VRAM in similarly-extreme circumstances in SpaceEngine as well. Shadow of Mordor at 4K with the infamous "6 GB" Ultra texture pack as TopicClocker is running it would be an extreme situation, and I doubt he would be getting perfect frametimes with that.

Even if this weren't a discussion of the 970 VRAM issues but instead 980s, hitting that high VRAM usage (full 4 GBs framebuffer) would lead me to believe it's likely the game would be calling for even more anyway and therefore there would be some frametime spikes being caused by it that simply may not have been noted for a myriad of reasons (transitional loading stutter is a thing people tend not to think much of, could already be sub-60 FPS from hammering GPUs alone at that resolution which masks additional performance hitches, could be TopicClocker has the game capped at 30 FPS since SoM used only a double-buffering Vsync solution the last time I heard of it which further masks performance dips, but I don't know). I'm not going to go off of any assumptions about TopicClocker's performance or testing method as if I was certain of what they were. The information TopicClocker provided does not contrast at all with what I've tested or think of what's going on.

Plainly, I think the 970s can certainly access all 4 GBs, but it seems as though the final 512 MBs may be limited to a fraction of the 970's full bandwidth potential and therefore the card acts cleverly to try and avoid using it unless necessary because of the potential performance hit or its unreliability. The results remind me of what I saw with a friend's GTX 660 once (in which 2GBs were unevenly spread across a 192-bit bus, causing the final 512 MBs to also be avoided unless necessary with the downside of reduced bandwidth if used), but the memory bus on the 970 looks perfectly fine and fit to handle its framebuffer so I won't pretend to know the cause, but I do recognize the symptoms. It could be a BIOS issue, a driver issue, a hardware issue, etc. Nobody here has the ability to validate or negate claims of what's going without frametime measurement tools or knowledge of Maxwell's internal workings.

Edit: Looking at TopicClocker's sig rig, he only appears to have one 970 which would make SoM at 4K with Ultra textures seem unlikely to be getting decent framerates, therefore frametime variance issues may be harder to detect, therefore he may not have noticed or may not have even been testing for stuttering caused by assets being swapped into and out of VRAM. I would need information from TopicClocker himself as I don't like just trying to piece together thoughts from assumptions, but I'm not seeing what disproves the problem at hand here.

I was testing SpaceEngine last night and managed to get over 3.5GB a number of times. Apparently 11% of the time I was in the 3600MB-3800MB region, highest I got was 3846MB. There wasn't much off a FPS hit when I was. This is a single GTX 970 at 1680x1050.
