Can't Secure GPU to Case

Thread Starter

I just got my GTX 980 (Gigabyte G1) today and I can't secure it to the case with it seated properly in the PCIe slot, the tower doesn't really get moved or bumped but I'm still a little worried about it, should I be? I was able to secure the 780 that I'm upgrading from just fine but with the 980 and my soundcard I can't, maybe I should see if the MB could slide a little closer to the edge?

This seemed like the best section to post this, please move it if it should be elsewhere.

What case is this? And have you tried loosening the pci slot cover just below the card? Looks really close to the video card.

I tend to have this very same issue when I am building a computer. When I do encounter the issue I just apple some pressure on the back of the case to push it inline a bit. It is not uncommon to have a thin piece of metal like whats found in a computer case to flex some. Out of curiosity what case do you have?

Sorry for the second post, I can't edit on tapatalk. Remove both pci covers, the one above your card and the one just below it and then try to install your card again. What I've noticed in my builds before is that sometimes these pci covers are not aligned properly and they will interfere with stuff you're trying to install.

Rosewill Thor V2. The expansion slot cover below was removed when I installed it, I'll see how it goes with both removed.

Other thing I could think of, do you still have those small plastic covers in place on display ports in the back of the the card? Sometimes they get caught on metal pci slots.

You mentioned your old card fit in the same slot. is the bracket on either the new or old card bent a little? In the pic it does look a little bent to me.

Slightly bent metal, or misaligned holes, is pretty common on cheaper cases, and not unheard of on more expensive ones. I've had rivets places too close to slots to allow proper seating (had to be drilled out), cards with bent brackets, cases with the holes punched wrong, cases with "toolless" fasteners that didn't quite fit, you name it. Usually a little gentle force or a drill does the trick.

After inspecting the back of my case it seems like the upper part of the card is bent as the bottom is flush with my case and the top isn't.

No luck trying to re-seat it with the expansion covers removed and if I try to bend my case in the MB bends when I start to tighten the screw.

I think those plastic display port caps are in between your card bracket and the case, remove them and see if the card fits better.
