WD Caviar Blue HD Tune Graph

Thread Starter
Hi, I am trying to pinpoint what is causing my AMD drivers to crash in just ~half of my games and cause a black flickering screen even after 2 fresh windows reinstalls, so now I am looking for hardware failure (if it can even cause something like that).

Can someone just tell me if the speeds are alright and if the graph should look like this? (temperatures seem OK and no damaged blocks)

Thanks, and I hope this is where the thread belongs.

That looks about right to me, the AAKX 500GB was 2 platters I believe, making it a bit slower than the 320/640GB wwhich use higher density platters I believe (1/2 respectively).

Based on the spin up count, if you haven't already, I would definitely recommend going to Windows Power Options, and under the High Performance Power Plan, setting the "Let Hard Disk Sleep After" setting to "0". This will prevent the drive from spinning down, increasingnot only rresponsiveness, but based on my experience with a LOT of drives running 24/7 in a non-enterprise environment, it also has reduced the failure rate/increased the life of the drives substantially. Spinning up is when the drive undergoes, far and away the most physical stress to the components, so keeping it spinning, an extremely surprisingly easy thing for the same components to do, hugely reduces the risk of failure by hugely reducing the time spent in the (Highway to the...) "Danger Zone" (!)

Here are some HDTune Pro tests I just ran on the WD3200AAKS (320GB, single platter) HDD I use for my TEMP/TMP/Browser-Cache data (Partition 1: 17.7GB) and "Downloads/Scratch Disk" for things like program installers etc (279GB).

I did tests of both the Short-Stroked first partition size, and of the entire drive capacity....
