Is XBMC now called Kodi?

Thread Starter
I want to install XBMC to run at startup on my small build I'm doing but the only thing that comes up is something called Kodi.

I was hoping to be able to control my PC with just my controller. I want XBMC to run at startup and to be able to launch Steam Big Picture from there. I saw some tutorial on how to do it that I wanted to try.

Yup, Xbox Media Center (XBMC) was renamed to Kodi, as the Xbox part isn't very relevant these days.

IMHO it was a bad idea. The name change is causing a lot of confusion, and XBMC was a widely recognized name.

Good idea IMHO, people will adjust to the name. XBMC was originally created for Xbox, as stated that really is no longer the case because if anything this is more widely used on other devices other than Xbox, to keep an outdated name is not good for image.

Posted about this a while back.

[XBMC] XBMC Is Getting a New Name – Introducing Kodi 14

It was much a legal move as it was a refresh to get away from the "xbox" or "xb" in it's name that has little to no significance anymore seeing as people run in on just about any device these days.

It's not been called "XBox Media Center" for years though. Like BP, it's name was changed to the acronym.

Confusion will pass. My problem is that the new name is just as nonsensical "XBMC". Something like "Center Stage" (just picking something off the top of my head) is far more catchy and conjurers a better mental image for what the software does. However naming projects is surprisingly hard. So I shouldn't really criticise.

Google is your friend: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=how+to+install+software+in+mint
  1. open software manager/center. it's in the menu.
  2. search your desired software in the search box
  3. if it's in the list then it will appear before you.
  4. now double click on the desired software entry and then click "install".
  5. it will be installed on your system as per your network connection speed.
