[ExtremeTech] Google throws nearly a billion Android users under the bus, refuses to patch OS vulnerability - Page 2

Before you all freak out, although so far that hasn't happened.....

July of this year will be two years since 4.3 was released. This isn't so much a Google issue as a carrier issue, and carriers either not providing updates for their customers phones, because pretty much every Android device could be upgraded from 4.1 to 4.4(KitKat) if carriers didn't lock customers out of that.

Exactly, this has nothing to do with Google. It's on the carriers to update the phones. I have an LG G3, and my friend who has the same phone but from Sprint, just got the update to Lolipop. Where as I am still stuck on 4.1 with Verizon, with no news as to when this update will be coming. And this is a newer phone. I feel bad for the people with older than a year phones.

Good luck to U.S. Cellular customers....

They have to be the worst with updates, and when they do release them, they tend to break the phones.

Verizon claims that it does "tests" to determine stability on their network. Its smoke and mirrors for not rolling updates in a timely manner, if at all.

Yeah, it was a rhetorical question. wink.gif

I was astounded that they pushed the Jellybean update to my Galaxy S3 at all, much less around the same time that the other carriers did.

I think a lot of Android users are also at fault for manufacturer's not updating their phones frequently. I swear every casual person I have met that's on a mid-range Galaxy device, for example, just don't update their phones even if the update is available. I think a lot of manufacturers are aware of this and therefore only provide updates to the high-end models where enthusiasts thrive and where updates are critical as not to trample on the manufacturer's image.

I think you mean the phone manufacturers. Like Samsung, LG, etc... who handle the updates.

Most of the delays are in the hands of the carriers. Look how fast GPE phones get updates vs unlocked vs carrier locked.
HTC made a great infographic about the process and they're good with keeping their users in the loop of where they are.

75/25, The Carriers unfortunately have to "approve" any and all updates for Carrier phones, This is why the Verzion Galaxy Nexus didn't get updates anywhere near as quickly as the vanilla GNex... Of course the device manufacturers have to provide the update in the first place but a lot of the time the US Carriers hold back the updates

But yeah, this is just going to fuel the "throw away buy new" thing, Especially with the new ATT Next/Verizon whatever payment plans where you can easily "upgrade" a year later for roughly what you would have paid up front for a 2 year contract before...

The carriers/device makers make nothing by updating your old phone.. They want you to buy a new phone and lock into some new services or something to earn money...

Well my Xperia SP got around 1.5 year of support. I was told by Sony that I will get 4.4 but they kept rewriting the support page when eventually they drooped the support. And on the next day I was rooted with 4.4.
