But yeah, this is just going to fuel the "throw away buy new" thing, Especially with the new ATT Next/Verizon whatever payment plans where you can easily "upgrade" a year later for roughly what you would have paid up front for a 2 year contract before...

The carriers/device makers make nothing by updating your old phone.. They want you to buy a new phone and lock into some new services or something to earn money...

I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a serious financial motivation behind this decision. If you think about it, a lot of people are probably going to upgrade for "security". Which means Google moves more phones, and carriers move those same phones. Google and the carriers both can benefit from this hugely!

I think it might be Google attempting to light a fire under the manufacturers and the carriers because Google has been trying to get more control over Android lately...

Glad I jumped ship from Android...not like they were really doing much for me with my old Gingerbread phone. Every app update broke functionality in one way or another.

Gingerbread was horrible for me lol, I didn't mind apple phones of that era.

Just updated my father in laws S2 that was still on 2.3 and 4.1.2 is doing wonders for his phone. He plans to get a new phone in a few months so it was more of a way to break the ice to the newer ui.

Jellybean really cleaned up android compared to gingerbread if I'm not mistaken.

On topic:

I gave up on carriers to update my device. I would still have 4.1.

Plus taking measures into your own hands gives you more knowledge on how to work with Android devices in traditional and untraditional methods (using recovery to flash roms or using adb sideboard / fastboot)

I was pumped when Verizon upgraded the first Galaxy Tab (CDMA) to 2.3.4,

I had experimented with different roms/kernels up to honeycomb but they all had some quirks (GSM was getting all the love)

Hard to think it's the "windows XP" of android when I wanted it so badly back on 2.2

Fragmentation will remain Android as Achilles Heel

XDA custom roms, not a problem. we still get the latest iteration of droid on our aging devices

Personally i think the OS that the Phones/Tablet comes with is probably the best one. With most Android phones you cant even tell the difference between 5.0 and 4.4. Also if Apple had the option to downgrade i would still use them.

Still annoyed that it takes forever to get any sort of updates on android. No xda support no buy.
