Aerodynamics theory/question.

I'm sure most people here know the Silverstone raven rv05, what makes it special and what not. Just in case, it is a 90 degree rotated motherboard mount with dual 180mm air penetrator fans as intake in the bottom. Due to the nature and engineering of the ap181s, the airflow is very directive and travels a good distance. Now, for my question/theory. Most people would say that makes the case for your typical tower coolers because they are getting more air due to the air being directed right to it, however, would the constant powerful airflow not make a top-down cooler a better option? Pulling the cool intake down through the fins, then once more pushing it out the top, which can be accelerated through the use of a 120mm exhaust above the CPU area. Thoughts?

Actually there have been multiple discussions about the Silverstone design VS. the usual layout VS. having something blowing down VS. etc. The real answer to it is it doesn't matter what the orientation is, wherever the fan directs air is where it will go, the whole reason why Silverstone has a very effective design is the clean layout (not a lot of obstructions) and the very powerful 180 mm fan (their design for the whole column of air blowing in a direct path greatly helps!).

There was an article (I can't find the link) before that showed a certain test using an ordinary case to show that it can and does perform the same by flipping the case around to perform what the Silvestone case does or something like that!

In terms of your theory, the best flow is always from one direction to another, left to right or right to left or top to bottom or bottom to top. In terms of using a CPU cooler that is top down versus a tower cooler in an RV-05, the turbulence would break the flow and cause a less efficient CPU fan since air would be pushing up from under the heatsink and from the top causing more drag on the fan reducing its effectiveness. I used to have an RV-02 and tried both a Noctua NH-C14 (2 fans) top down cooler and a Hyper 212 (2 fans) and the 212 performed better. Maybe it depends on the cooler used as well, but at least from my experience the cooler that followed the flow (bottom to top) performed better. Lastly, the top exhaust is useless (it just adds more noise) if you use a tower cooler with two fans since it can generate enough air to exhaust out the hot air.

Essentially, since the ap181 will provide a constant column of air, it will feed the top-down cooler, like a noctua c14, then push the air up after its passed through the fins.

Sorry I edited out my first comment and added a few in the end. I mentioned the NH-C14 did not perform any better versus my Hyper 212 with 2 fans in push and pull. i was using a 3770k OCd to 4.5 Ghz @1.25 volts at the time. The difference was at best 2*C at full load (P95) though, small yet worth it for me.

EDIT: You have to understand that the AP-181 blows air at the bottom part of the NH-C14 as well not just the top part of the top down cooler.

I see. I'm only looking to change coolers because the fan on mine makes the whole heatsink vibrate. Terribly annoying if left on at night. The cooling performance is more or less fine, my mobo seems to limit my oc. I like the ravens design, and the ap181s are very quiet, which takes precedence with me.

What heat sink do you have by the way? Why not buy a new fan instead of a new heat sink? It's cheaper (like the Swiftech PWM fan) and do a push pull setup at 1000 rpm, that would make it inaudible over the AP-181.

I will be upgrading to the raven case soon, and my cooler is the cooler master x6 elite. I think the vibrating is caused by tho style of fan bracket, as rubber rings didn't help at all.

Yeah the X6 is a cooler with a plastic shroud that could be causing the vibrations. Heck if you replace that with the NH-C14 it would be more quiet and probably perform better.

What's your budget? Here's a few Phanteks Coolers that may be cheaper than the NH-C14:

PHANTEKS

The Phanteks PH-TC12DX_RD Dual 120mm PWM CPU Cooler is a good deal for $49.99! Though the Phanteks PH-TC14PE_RD 140mm CPU Cooler is probably the best choice since it comes out to $59.99 after rebates and performs like the NH-D14 and NH-D15 and should fit in the RV-02 (You may have to arrange the fans to be lower than the heat sink to fit though)!
