Get intel cpu, you won't regret. You might even be able to grab a cheap used combo.

So you will need a new mobo for it. The best thing here would be a FX-8320E or FX-8370E until you get a new mobo. Most E version can hit 5.0ghz+ with the right cpu cooler.
Really? He mighty be able to get 4.2ghz with a 8320 with that mobo. It is a 4+1 power phase mobo.

So? 4.2 8320 is better than a 4100 processor. Sell the 4100 and buy a 8320 for 100 or less. Cheap upgrade. If he really wants to he can sell his current mobo and CPU and grab an intel set up.
He will need a fan for the VRM to get around 4.2ghz. His best bet if he is going to stay with AMD is FX-8320E. It is a low voltage leak cpu. Meaning he can hit the same speeds as the FX-8320, but with less voltage and he maybe able to hit a high clock with a 8320E vs. 8320.
