accuracy of "lm-sensors"?

Thread Starter
Hi all,
I have been playing around with Ubuntu 14.04 with KDE and i just took a reading of my GPU temps (2x 7970) and they are reported at 28 and 30 c respectively. I have a 1440p display and a 1080p display hooked into the master card. Since this temperature is very low, I question the accuracy of the lm-sensors program (I would get like 35-38c with one display plugged into each card on Win 7). Does anyone have any thoughts on if these temps sound correct or any remarks on the accuracy of lm-sensors?

Thanks!

P.S.: It also seems that the two temperatures do not change from 28 and 30.

You might be looking at different sensors compared to the Windows program you used, or the GPUs could really be colder if power-saving stuff on the desktop works different with the different graphics drivers.

That lm-sensors thingy isn't really a program, it's just exposing hardware sensors as devices for other programs to read. I don't see what could go wrong there except that some sensors might need a formula to translate their reading into a real temperature. That could be wrong or missing for these particular devices?

While in Windows, you could try the program named "HWINFO" (select the sensor view when you start it). It shows a good bit more stuff than other programs. That might lead you to something, might show you the sensor that lm-sensors is looking at.

A last thing, did you compare at same room temperature?

What you added with your edit... can you explain what you are doing exactly? Are you looking at some GUI program? Is this the output of "sensors" in a console window?

In terminal I am executing the "sensors" command which brings up temperatures for my processors and two GPU's.

When i execute the sensor command, here is the read out in the terminal window:
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +27.8°C (crit = +106.0°C)
temp2: +29.8°C (crit = +106.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0: +35.0°C (high = +85.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 0: +32.0°C (high = +85.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 1: +33.0°C (high = +85.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 2: +30.0°C (high = +85.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 3: +35.0°C (high = +85.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)

I know those two temperatures. tongue.gif Those are not the GPUs. You can also see those two readings in Windows sensor programs as "ACPI"-something. Those are also always 28 and 30 C for me, and never change. No idea what's going on there.

You could try to run "sudo sensors-detect" and see if sensors will see more afterwards. You should get at least one new block of values that comes from the main sensor chip on your motherboard. I don't know if lm-sensors can read graphics card sensors (it at least can't do it for my nvidia card).

That would make alot of sense. Thanks! And rep
