while AMD can outperform Nvidia in raw compute, its still having a bad attempt in power consumption and heat.

even if we put aside power consumption, the heat is bad enough that R9 295X2 needed dual LCS to work right...
i just hope they've gotten their attempt straight, power consumption is directly related to heat so AMD is just bad in efficiency.

on that regard, Intel+Nvidia is more practical atm, GTX970 is too cost efficient, and the combined efficiency means you don't have to shell out bucks for a larger PSU.

in comparison, AMD CPU+GPU is so far off in efficiency to the point that you'd need a 700W PSU to run FX-8350+R9 290X both OCed...
though on that point, its such an efficient space heater you could live through winter without ever turning on a dedicated heater at all.
but the opposite applies too, the excessive heat would awfully make the room hot, and thats bad in the tropical regions.

like i said, if you have a tiny house, a tiny room, worried about energy cost - go green.thumb.gif

yeah, if only it wasn't such a premium in doing so biggrin.gif
it doesn't make sense though, why does going less costs more!?

according to the person above your post though, we could expect as much as 40% less power consumption at the same performance.
i.e. because at least -35% GPU and 60% for the VRAM, while 256bit VRAM constitutes 30% of the entire board.
then thats (30% * 0.4) + (70% * 0.65) = 57.5% rounded up to 60% or ~40% less power consumption.

which means a R9 290X whom competes directly to GTX970 and is just slightly behind GTX980, of such a card would consume only a mere ~160W.

The folks complaining about power usage are uh.. nevermind. I won't even entertain the thought of responding to children.

i've already pointed it out but price of electricity isn't the only factor, the fact that you'd need a 850W for 290X crossfire, in comparison to 650W for GTX970 SLI is a huge difference.
you save like $50 for going to the latter PSU capacity, if you mean that $50 is irrelevant though thats subjective.

How many times do you have to buy a PSU? I got my AX1200 long time ago. I payed $250. I have spend well over $2K+ in GPUs since then.

nobody faults you on that, its just sad that AMD is so far behind in efficiency.
we could really do some low-power high-performance GPUs so it would fit on cheap 520W S12II seasonics or something along those lines.

then theres the factor of heat dumped into your case, and room while at it.
hotter cards needs more intake fans or exhaust fans, or a combination of both.
thats additional costs, if these fans are noctuas then expect $24 a pop...

i don't reuse the old PSUs if i buy a new rig, that'd only disable the old rig into a heap of parts.
i normally leave the core parts that makes the rig run and only take the redundant parts, meaning i could boot up the old rigs just fine thumb.gif
not that i regularly do so though, the old rigs i had have been either sold or given away, its easier to do so if its a working package.

I don't see how that has anything to do with what I said? I just said that people care about noise and heat more than the power bill. All of those are of course related to power consumption.

Doesn't really matter, they're the least believable "leak" in recent memory.

If you're thinking about the stuff rationally you'll quite quickly come to the conclusion that some person having all of the following: GM200 flagship, GM200 cut down card, Fiji card, Bermuda card + drivers for all of them (and months, and months before launch of each card) is extremely unlikely. As in so unlikely that I don't really understand why someone would even entertain the idea that the rumors might have credibility.

I could just as well say that you're hoping that they're true but we both know that in this case I'm much, much more likely right.

not really you can get a 300w gpu with a big fanless heatsink or a triple slot heatsink with low speed fans or 2.5Slots with. 1200rpms
