Dual monitor setup problems after cable swaps (on NVIDIA card)

Hi guys,

So here is relevant info:
Gigabyte geforce gtx750, with latest drivers. Has 2 HDMI and 2 DVI connections
ASRock Z97 Extreme 6/ac mobo
2 identical monitors, each with 1 VGA, 1 DVI, 1 HDMI input.
Windows 8.1 pro, entirely updated

I setup dual monitors on the graphics card (1 through a VGA --> DVI connection and 1 through HDMI). No issues so far.

I then swapped monitor location and in the process I believe I switched the cables. This time the primary monitor worked. The secondary monitor was registered by my system, i.e. visible in Windows' "Screen Resolution" and NVIDIA control panel, but the screen remained black and the monitor light orange rather than blue, which indicates lack of connection.

I tried moving the cables to different connections on the graphics card, restarting the computer, messing with the dual monitor settings in both Windows and NVIDIA control panels. Nothing worked to get the second monitor to show a picture. Finally I swapped the cables between the 2 monitors and they both worked....

Later 2 new DVI cables arrived and I wanted to replace the VGA --> DVI cable and HDMI cable with these 2 new DVI cables. Once again the main monitor had no issues with the cable switch, and showed up immediately. The secondary monitor, which had been using the HDMI, refuses to work with the DVI cable. I tried switching the order of the DVI cables on the graphics card, unplugging the power cable, restarting the computer, disabling and reenabling the monitor in devices, and more. It's always visible in the control panels and acts as though its live, but the screen remains black. Finally I gave up and went back to the HDMI cable and it works.

I COULD just stick to 1 DVI and 1 HDMI but then I have a couple wasted cables and no solution to this maddening issue. If someone could shed some light on what's going on, I'd really appreciate it.

One more (related?) issue that happened after I switched my main monitor from the VGA --> DVI cable to the DVI cable. When mousing over icons on the desktop, they started to get black squares around them, then the whole desktop background turned black. Here is an image of the squares:

I have no idea why that happened but seems to be related to the new cables since it happened just after replacing them. Any ideas on this one?

Thank you,
Will

That looks more like VRAM / rendering issues from the cards themselves.

Try re-installing the drivers, cleanly, with the monitors just the way you want them.

Thank you! I just did a clean install of the Nnvidia drivers with monitors correct and nothing changed. Did you mean reinstalling the onboard video drivers as well? It seems like the nvidia drivers are taking the settings from the onboard video, so that would likely be the way to go but just want to know if that is what you meant in the first place.

I just retried it, removing the graphics card driver and the onboard graphics driver, then reinstalling onboard then graphics card driver (w/clean install). No change.

Is there anything else further I can do to reset how the system deals with the monitors? Even after uninstalling both drivers, Windows still allows management of the monitors through the screen resolution utility, and nothing there resets. I have a feeling that I have to go further, but not sure what to do.

Thanks again for your help.

I am pretty sure this is a driver, bug, thing. Just to be thorough let's see some of your setup.

Can you take a picture of the cable ends, the GPU out connections, and with it all fully connected. (I.e. Check the pins and show us how you have them plugged into the computer.) See if you can also get pictures of the monitor socket as well.

Can you provide your Monitor's manufacturer and model number?

In the mean time let me see if I can find something related to this, I have some ideas but I need more information.

Here are the pics of the cables/components/connections. Hope this is what you were looking for. The model number of the monitors (both are same exact monitors) is Insignia NS-24EM51A14. I've tried with another DVI cable and get the same results:

Do the monitors have an auto-source change when it detects the display has no source? I.e if you pull out a DVI while it is on, does it switch to HDMI?

Wow so I feel like an idiot. I swapped the HDMI for the DVI cable and pressed OK on the front of the monitor (to access menu), and noticed that the input still showed HDMI. I switched it to DVI and light remained orange. But then I looked in "screen resolution" on my primary monitor and noticed that only one monitor was showing up. So I restarted and what do you know...they both work.

This whole time I never thought to check whether the inputs were auto-changing or not, I just assumed they were. There is an auto setting in the source options too, but I guess that wasn't set.

Anyway, thank you so much, I don't know that I'd ever have figured that out on my own. Really appreciate it!
