[Reuters] Sony CEO eyes options as pressure mounts on weak TV, mobile - Page 2

I have to say, I actually REALLY like Sony. I have a 46" LED TV in my living room that I bought almost 3 years ago that has been great. It was only $600 then and it replaced an 8 year old Sony rear projection LCD that my brother is still using and looks great even now.
This past Christmas I purchased a Sony 2.1 sound bar system that really sounds very good.
I got rid of my S4 and bought a Z3 and had my wife get rid of her iPhone 5 for a Z3c. The battery life on these phones, especially the compact version, is redonkulous!! My wife had to charge her iPhone 5 (brand new Apple battery) twice a day to get to the end of the day. Now she charges her Z3c every other day after using the phone more. I easily get 2 full days of moderately heavy use, and have gotten 3 days (17% batter left) on lighter use.

The screens look great, they function very, very smooth and fast. The cameras are okay (auto), and the waterproof (resistant) aspect of the phones have come in quite handy more than I expected.

The one thing holding them back on mobile sales.....availability. Put that junk at every carrier and advertise it. If they did, they would sell more of them. They truly are great phones. The Z3c has to be the best overall phone (package) I have come across.

I hope they can right the ship. They really make great quality products and I enjoy supporting them!

both my wife and I are waiting on the new sony lineup of phones and tablets. The z4 will be amazing, waterproof will allow my wife to replace the phone less while for me I get a beastly tablet in a few months. Sony does charge .... A LOT, perhaps more than they should for what they offer but they do make nice tablets and phones.

Yeah I would love to get a Sony phone but no one carries them except for Big Red, and I don't want a Xperia bad enough to pay $90 a month

I don't think it's so much the price. I mean, if you're going to talk about overprice, ifagApple products are equally overpriced yet people are throwing money at Apple's front door every day.

I cannot pinpoint what is it that they are doing wrong, it's a little bit of something at every area.

Their TV's are overpriced. They have to be more aggressive with TV pricing.

You can see this by comparing prices of comparable product lines of other big manufacturers at the big e-tailers and retailers.

What carrier are you with now? I purchased my phones directly from Sony. They had a deal going that if you did the interest free financing with them and spent at least $500, you got a $100 credit back on your statement. My credit was applied back within 2 weeks. That makes the Z3 Compact a $430 phone brand new. When you compare it with the iPhone 6, which it competes with, it is hundreds less.

Their phones will work on Straight Talk, AT&T (my carrier), T-mobile, etc.

Their TV's may be priced high, I don't know. I haven't looked for a TV in a few years as I am happy with what I have. Their phones are less expensive than most. I could either get my wife a 64GB iPhone 6 for $900, or a Z3c with a 64GB sd card for $500...

She is still getting used to it and tries to act like she doesn't like it, but once she gets used to the new OS, she will be fine. She was on iOS for 7 years with a short 2 months on W8P.
If they just make their availability better in the mobile market, they would do great. I have no need for a tablet, yet I REALLY want to buy a Z3 tablet compact.

If they had put any of their flagship phones on verizon the past 5 years, I would have bought them up and im sure many others would have as well.

That was their biggest issue in the USA at least. I understand from their production viewpoint that they were making gsm/hspa(+) based phones and didnt want to have to redesign the phone (like the Z3v, verizons half z2 half z3 phone that is pretty meh...No way comparable to the real Z3)just for one carrier, since the P/L gets sticky.

And your wife....I went through the same thing back when the S3 came out, mine was on a iphone 4, she didnt like android at first, but given a month, and she loved it way more. This was probably in part due to her using her phone for work a lot, and their whole email/doc system is used through google, so the connectivity was there.

Funny this article is mentioned right now.

I was at the local Target with my Fiance yesterday and noticed they did not have one single Sony TV on their huge wall of displays. Almost all were Samsung and Vizio, two or three Phillips/Magnavox's, and a handful of low end Westinghouse and Element sets. The employee said that Vizio's are outselling everyone right now, and I can see why...the features they have at their price points are impressive.

Curious if its the same story at Best Buy's and Walmarts...just like cellphones needing carrier adoption, its hard to sell TV's when nobody is stocking them.

Its not the same. Target, walmart...places like that require insanely low margins for the tv's being sold there. It is no surprise Sony/Toshiba/Panny aren't on those shelves.

You will find plenty of sonys and such at an actual electronics shop.
