Possible (?) | Flash 290x Bios w/o 'Booting From' 290x | Debugging a Crashed Card

Hello All,

What's Happened:

So I've run into a bit of a problem with one of my 290x Lightning cards. Whenever it is connected I get a B-2 error. Alright, no big deal. I take it out check if the integrated graphics work and update all the drivers & bios, etc.

Then I check again. Plug back in the problem child, boom, same error. Alright, well, maybe it's a corrupted bios / bad bios file? Hm...

So...

Error Display:

290x L Bios [LN2] = B 2 Debug Error

290x L Bios [Reg] = A9 / A2

Hmm...

Variables & Possible Meaning:

So either the [LN2] bios is corrupted, and therefore causing an initialization error, or the card has a hardware problem.

&

So either the [Reg] bios is not set up [A9], there is a possible hard-drive issue [A2], or the card has a hardware problem.

In both scenarios (on both bios settings) a problem child bios could be the issue. I've set up a boot USB drive, containing win98 boot files and bios files, for the 290x. But I can't -- or don't know how to -- flash the bios file; considering when connected the integrated graphics kicks off and nothing is output to any of my monitors when connected through the 290x.

Onboard LED indicators -- no matter to bios -- default to 'Yellow LED' upon start-up. Suggesting the problem could be bios related.

Question(s):

  • So, any recommendations?
  • Is it possible to flash a bios update on the graphics card without the card being utilized as the output device?
  • (I have some spare graphics cards laying around -- if it is possible to output via a 6970 with a 290x connected to update the bios file)

All the best,

Live_Free

----

EDIT: Tried some more things.

  • Tried different PCI-E slots -- no avail.

I'm working through the RMA process -- but if anyone has any recommendations I'm all ears!

Thanks,

Yes. Unplug the card, go in your bios and select the IGP on your CPU as the primary display output device and reboot. Then flash the gpu as usual (with your monitor connected to your motherboard cpu igp output obviously).

Thanks for the advice!

I tried it -- unfortunately it didn't work. I had to RMA the card. Oh well. At least I have back ups!

Thanks
