Is this a HD6950 1GB hardware issue?

Hi, I'll try to keep this simple and organized. This problem has been bugging me for some time, I was wondering if it's a graphics card issue?

- Same build for 2 years, nothing changed
- Suddenly in ONLY SOME games (seen in at least 10) this will happen as soon as it starts up (usually can't even get to the menu) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TcD0zsurC4 - 10s video

- Sometimes get this message

- Sometimes twitch stream/youtube videos in Chrome will go black after this/aero will crash

- Other games work perfectly, no issues, ranging from 2D scrollers to taxing 3D games

- Since I get the driver message and can't fix it with any methods I fully wipe the HDD and reinstall Windows
- Install latest MB drivers and completely different, latest GPU drivers
- Same thing happening IN SAME GAMES, but Counter Strike: Global Offensive suddenly works! (didn't beforehand)

- I played CS:GO for a few hours and decided to change video settings: changed shadows, texture quality, FXAA and AA and it started crashing and same thing happening. Now can't even open it.
- Civilization V - same thing happening when I start it in DX10/11, but can play when I choose the DX9 option in the launcher.

Is this a hardware issue? I'm asking because I can't really try the GPU anywhere else or have another one. The only some games working really perplexed me.

P.S. - As soon as I pressed submit the site decided to stop working, so I also got that working for me. biggrin.gif

If different drivers along with a fresh windows 7 install did not make a difference I would say a gpu replacement may be in order.
Do you have another gpu to test with?
alternatively have you checked any other hardware in the system such as hard drive or ram?

EDIT: site has also been a little glitchy for me the past half hour.

I've tested my hard drive with everything I've seen on the Internet, and actually started a thread here a few days ago, and it seems to be working just fine.
I haven't tested the RAM, should I try memtest?

And does anyone maybe know why it wouldn't work in only like half of my games, and crash even before seeing the menu?

I don't really have a GPU to try right now, I'll try to find something.

I would try memtest86 to make sure your memory is not the culprit.
How long have you had the card?
What power supply do you have?
Has the card been overclocked or over volted at all, ever?

For a bit over 2 years now I'd say. It's a Seasonic 620W, should be plenty of power, and I have never overclocked the gpu. The temps are also alright. It doesn't crash even at full load in programs like Furmark wha-smiley.png .

I'll try the memtest now and if it passes I'll just have to find another GPU to try it.

How many different drivers have you tried with it? at one point when i had a 7970 I had tried about 6 different versions lol. one of many reasons i went to the green side. I just don't like amd's drivers...

When the AMD Display driver stops responding does the screen flash black and give you stuttering / hanging audio?

This happened to me years ago with a 4650 that I tried to bump the memory clock on. After I played on it for a couple years, it did these crashes at a steadily increasing rate. I would test with new drivers / rolled back drivers. If it continues then it could be damaged GPU.

EDIT: Try heaven or something more "real life" than furmark, see if it crashes. I think it's more likely to be drivers than anything else, I would also try a different cable/port

Good suggestion ^

this happened when I oced the 460gtx i had.are you on stock clocks?.maybe the card is not properly using the voltage that needs

So, some news, but first: memtest ran 2 passes with no errors, as I have said I have never OCed the card and actually tried underclocking it and it stayed the same but:

As LDV617 suggested I ran Heaven, played with some settings and it ran fine UNTIL I enabled AA and then it crashed.
After that I enabled the option in Catalyst Control Center to override applications and turned AA off, and 3 of 4 games that didn't work (those I have tried) now do... lol.
At least I can play something
