Intel Q6600@3.0ghtz and amd r9 280x

Hi everyone. I have an old system which I'll upgrade eventually. I'm considering waiting for skylake (i hope I'm right) processrs. But i want to play latest games. Many people says gpu matters more in games than cpu any quad cute will do. I want to know if i upgrade my graphics card to r9 280x will Q6600@3.0ghtz will be able to handle it or bottleneck it. I'm using 1080p led. Also my board support pci e 2.0. Is there any significant difference between using pci e 2.0 and 3.0 on single screen that is 1080p. I hope you understand what I'm asking.....

honestly, one of my Q6600 @3.6 can barely keep up with a downclocked R9 280(7950). And 2.0 to 3.0 with that setup won't make any difference. But you can still USE an R9 280x. It's not like it's not going to work. It's just that your 280x won\t be loaded fully. Bottleneck just means cpu goes full blast, desperately trying to keep up with a GPU. @1080p, most of the time, the GPU will have the say so, unless it's GTA IV. Metro LL struggles, but only when Tessellation is on. Bottom line. It will be fine, but don't think it is your GPU when frame rates drop. I's most likely your cpu

Can you share cpu fsb, volts and temps.. i am using h100i but will shift to nh d15....

a 270x may make more sense in this situation then a 280x

h100i -> nh d15 = expensive side grade. save your money

Ya I had a Q6600 in a system I gave away a while back. Honestly you should spend a little bit of money and upgrade your CPU and Motherboard, there is only so much you can push out of that old quad core this late in the game.

Both are good overclockers, both should do fine with a 280x at 1080p. If you need ram, pick up yourself a 8gb kit on sale.

I have 2 setups. one is an EVGA 780i FTW and the other is a Foxconn x38 Digital Life. 400x9x1.52v. Both setups use an H100, temps hit 70 to 74C, depending on the game. Both setups are only stable in 3D mark and games. All those other hard core cpu torture tests crash

Q6600 doesn't have SSE4.1 microinstructions widely used for games, that the next 45nm generation of Core 2 Quad does
