Thinking about overclocking my i2500k. In need of a good heatsink and some tips!

Hello,
I am going to overclock my cpu, but i'm in the need of a CPU cooler that would be good for this. Thinking about OC:ing it to something from 4.2GHz to 4.5GHz.

More specifically what i am looking for:
  • Affordable
  • Does not have to look super cool with 1000 LED:s on it
  • I guess it can be pretty big, since i have a lot of room inside my case
  • Well, it has to be able to keep the CPU stable at heavy load when overclocked.

Also, i am new to overclocking so ANY tips are appreciated.
Tell me things i should be careful of, remember to do, absolutely not do.

If people have past experience in overclocking with a similar build, please share!

I used a $40 H50 to OC my 2500K to 4.5GHz. Never had an issue.

I cooled my 2500k with an older Xigamatek Dark Knight at 4.6ghz, no issues.

You could probably use a Cooler Master Hyper 212 and be fine.

What voltage did you have your CPU at? And also, what other settings did you change in BIOS

HR-02 Macho. Whichever version is cheapest. TS-140 also an option if you have >170mm headroom in your case. But usually, the HR-02 Macho will fit most cases (162mm I believe).

Or cheaper, like a Hyper 212, Dark Night, Alpenfohn Matterhorn Pure, True Spirit 120, Ninja 3.... There are a bunch of decent coolers that won't cost you a fortune and will overclock to 4.4->4.6ghz.

It was at 1.332v on higher loads using adaptive voltage. I just used the EZ overclock profile to set the mutiplier at 46x and the BIOS did the rest.

For 4.2-4.4 just raise multiplier.
I am on Asus p8p67 with 4.4. For every day use all stock with eased multiplier. 4 years without any problems

I overclocked my i5-2500k to 4.2GHz by following this video, its very informative I recommend watching it.
I use Noctua NH-D14 though any decent cooler would keep your temps balanced, the i5-2500k is an OC beast, I recommend you to get smooth copper contact base, because those direct contact heat pipes can be tricky and could trap air bubbles, so get a cooler that has smooth contact base.

I agree... H50. That's the way to go.
