[Build Log] Corsair Carbide Air 540 Custom WC - "Mjölnir"

Greetings fellow OCN members. The time has come for me to build a new computer, and I have decided to share it with the world. As a disclaimer this is my first time doing a build log, so constructive critisism is welcomed. I hope to have regular status updates but the real world may prevent that from happening.

The goal of this build is to have a rock solid rig without completely breaking the bank. This is replacing the 6 year old rig in my sig, hopefully this will last me another 6+ years.

I don't have a name for this build at this time, but if i come up with something I'll update.
I have decided to go with the name Mjölnir, I think it will suit the color scheme I will be going with, and as a huge fan of the Halo franchise, I couldn't resist.

With that being said lets get down to the details on this build.

Hardware being received:

Case in box, I won't bore anyone with unboxing pictures, first because I did not take any, and second because there are already threads with very detailed unboxing sequences.

Radiators and fans arrived, unfortunately Amazon messed up the order and sent me the 3 140mm fans over on the right. I've contacted them and the correct fans were shipped and received.

The current state of the build, i am planning to do push pull on the front 360mm radiator, push only on the top radiator, and then the 140mm fan at the back will also be an intake.
I played with the idea of mounting the push fans on the outside of the case to even out the look between the top and front radiators, however I don't want to lose the dust filter on the front so the current plan is to mount it as shown.

If that doesn't give me enough positive pressure i don't know what will. whistle.gif

Small update, I received my shipment from Corsair. I ordered a set of replacement feet, just in case I damage the existing feet while removing. I managed to get two off without insident, but the other two look like they want to put up more of a fight. I also received a windowed side panel, and two additional hot-swap connectors. My current plan is to mount 4 SSDs on a flat surface using the hot-swap connectors.

Things on my current to-do list:
  • Mod top of case and fabricate radiator mount. The existing mount points do not line up with where I would like to have the radiator mounted. New mount will most likely be made out of acrylic.
  • Remove hot-swap bays from the bottom of the motherboard side of the case. I have no intention of using these, and they are in the way, so they will be removed. New bottom for that side of the case will also be fabricated out of acrylic. I am drawing a bit of inspiration from Kier's build in this same case for the bottom of mine. I hope mine will look at least half as good as his did.

And finally I have some parts on the way. My new ASUS X99-Pro motherboard should arrive early next week, as should my EVGA GTX980 Classified GPU. Once I have those parts in place I'll be able to get a better idea of my final layout, as well as how I will be routing my cables and coolant lines.

Speaking of coolant, I am leaning towards rigid acrylic, however I have never worked with it. What are your thoughts?

Not much was accomplished over the weekend, I did decide to drill out the rivets on the case though. I will be cutting some of the panels and it will make it much easier, and it should make final assembly easier.

And then today I received my new Alphacool D5 pump and top, I was so excited I assembled it without taking any pictures. Once assembled I decided I would break out my mad scientist, and test the pump to make sure it works!

Using an ATX power supply and fan header would have been too easy, so I went with a bench-top power supply and a custom PWM circuit for this test. Using the scope to verify the PWM signal that I am sending to the pump.

I have to say I am very impressed by the pump, even with a little bit of air in the loop at full speed it was very quiet. I couldn't hear it over my old computer sitting across the room.

Other than that my GPU should arrive tomorrow, and the memory, CPU, power supply, and some nuts and bolts should be here on Thursday, and the motherboard should arrive sometime between Friday and Monday.

Updates from this past week.

The delivery man was good to me this past week, as you can see I received many of the core components for the build. I have to say that while I expected the GPU to be big, I underestimated it's true size, when I went to mount it I had to remove the push fans from my front radiator. Those fans will now be mounted on the front of the case. Sadly that means that I will not be able to use the magnetic dust filter that came with the case and I will have to come up with something else. I also received the nuts and bolts I needed to bolt the case back together.

Everything mounted in the case, you can see what I meant by the size of the GPU

I also planned out the loop and ordered all the parts that I will need to build it. I went through it several times mentally, so I hope that I did not forget any parts or make any mistakes. I don't know if anyone else has been following the news of the EKWB block for the EVGA GTX 980 Classified, but it has been delayed repeatedly. I was hoping to have it ordered and on the way by now. Hopefully I don't regret buying this card and have to run it on air.

If everything goes according to my current plans the actual modding of the case will begin this upcoming week.

Kinda dissappointed on the name.. I named my PC Mjölnir and based everything on that topic, so keeping the components the yellow scheme with MSI's Lightning line of products. This doesn't feel even close to the name.
