[Build Log] X99 with Dual GTX 980s in a Case Labs SM8 - Page 3

I decided to step up each GTX 970 to a GTX 980. I returned the GTX 970s to Micro Center and simply mentioned the memory performance issue. They issued a store credit for the GTX 970s despite being over the 30 day return period. I used the store credit and the money from my tax refund for this step up.

The GTX 980s

The new GTX 980 video cards necessitated different GPU blocks. I got the EK GPU blocks from DazMode on Friday. I also received the Fujipoly SARCON XR-m thermal pads on Friday.

New GPU Blocks

Since I did not do a proper hardware test previously, I did a proper hardware test this time as I only had to take off the CPU block.

During the hardware test, I noticed one peculiar thing with the 28 lane 5820K CPU. I placed the sound card in the sixth slot (PCI_E6). The sound card is not recognized by the Board Explorer in the BIOS yet Windows detects the sound card and it works fine. I think the sixth slot is either shared with the M.2 connector, always uses 4 lanes from the 28 lane CPU, or is routed to the PCH. But I am not sure. Does anyone have any other theories?

I am back after another long hiatus.

During this time, I switch the radiators from Alphacool to Black Ice Nemesis. I ordered to the primer variant as I did not like the "Dark Matter" finish. Consequently, I will need to paint the radiators. I have chosen a stain black colour for the radiators.

In addition, I switched to black and less bulky looking fittings. The new fittings are the Matt Black Bitspower C47.

The only issue with the new fittings was finding metric stainless steel in North America but I found two suppliers (Spahr Metric and Parker Steel) of metric stainless steel. Both suppliers sell the tubing in only 6 meter (about 20ft) pieces. I will defintely have lots of tubing and will not have to worry about any mistakes.

I worked out the loop order. It is shown in the flow diagram below.

And now, I am starting to work on two fan hub (or fan distribution) circuit boards and their holders. I will use those boards instead of Y cables for a cleaner look.

I finished the schematics for the 6-way and 4-way PWM fan hubs. I will use the 6-way PWM fan hub for the front radiator and the 4-way PWM fan hub for the bottom radiator.

The schematics are attached as PDF documents.
