You've given us no relevant information, therefore we can't make a recommendation.

Motherboard?
CPU?
What do you want to do with the computer? Play games? Which games?
Do you have a sufficient power supply to run it?

You can't really go wrong with either board, but keep in mind the 290x2 is two R290's jammed on the same board with a PLX switch between them. It's basically a crossfire solution in one slot, with each half getting x8/x8 lanes. It's a hot beast - I hope you have air conditioning or cool summers where you live!

I'd get the GTX 980

Well To Give you more info. I have a i7-4790k with a NZXT kracken x61 that keeps the cpu running at about 50C under load no OC. I have 16Gb of Ram. I also plan to play games at 1080p and the most demanding games at that like BF4, Crysis 3, and also GTA 5. While doing this want to be at the highest settings available. I also can manage the Hot beast because I have sufficient cooling. I also can handle the power consumption of the R9 290x2 I have a EVGA 1000W G2 PSU.

If you don't mind Crossfire and it's driver issues with certain games, then the R290x2 would technically be the faster solution for most titles. I think it generally performs well in the titles you listed. Some people prefer a single-GPU solution, and if you do - the GTX 980 is one of the fastest single-GPU boards available.

For those games at 1080 . . . you just need a 290X. even a 290 will do. Just one. Oc the cpu a bit.

BTW, the new gens are coming out soon. I suggest wait.

edit: my bad, not sure about GTA V. But even a 280 will max out BF4 using 1080.
