While the x9 case can support up to 13 hdds or more most motherboards support from 6-8. How one could connect more than 8 hdds on a motherboard?

You would use a PCIe SATA or RAID card, such as one of these:

I just found something strange with the X9. The 200mm fan that came with it does NOT fit in the 200mm higher front fan opening. You'd need a low profile 200mm fan to fit that top one. mad.gif

Edit: Bitfenix Spectre Pro 200mm might work, only 25mm thick and they move a ton of air. biggrin.gif

Yeah, I measured the 200mm case fan that came with the X9, it's 34mm. I'm sure the 25mm Bitfenix will fit. thumb.gif

Thanks for the info!
Will it be as fast as the ones from the motherboard?

Yes, a PCIe card SATA controller should be just as fast as a motherboard SATA controller. They each sit on a PCIe lane from the chipset. However, I've never seen a review that tests that particular aspect.

PCIe cards have been tested related to SSD-on-card vs M2 see also https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Overview-of-M-2-SSDs-586/

Either way, PCIe SATA cards are not "slower" as the MB SATA ports.. unless you for the real cheap "can attach 6 HDDs" ones. Technically they should be faster as the SATA ports on the MB. They should be PCI-E 2.0 2x or 3.0 2x or 4x (3.0 8x for RAID cards)

Not that it matters, because the limiting factor on SATA is not the MB or pci-lanes. The limit is imposed by the SATA port/controller on the DISK and the "max-speed" of the disk.
Which is why HDDs could not "flood" the SATA ports and SSDs can.

I had a 200mm Spectre Pro laying around. It's 25mm thick compared to the 33mm thick fan that came with the case. The Spectre Pro does NOT fit in the highest front 200mm fan mount. The plastic on the case front that surrounds the 5 1/4 bays interferes with it. frown.gif

Only other thing I can do is buy a 20mm thick 200mm fan and try that.
