Unfortunately, the x5 sacrifices a lot of fans and it isn't really that much smaller. It's only about 4 inches less deep, 0.5 inch less wide, and 1.5 inches less tall. You lose access to exactly 9 possible fan/radiator slots total including one side panel completely. A bit disappointing but still going to swap out my x9 to the x5. I have several unused fan slots and most of the case is just empty space even with 4x AIO GPU's and an AIO CPU.

That's good. I'd say this - it's only "too big" based on your needs, the X9, that is.

The X5 is a compromise but if that's one you're willing to make, good deal. Glad there are more options out there. I think I will stick with the X9 though.

It is too big lol. I have the largest system you can possibly have and my case is 75% open air on the inside (EATX MB, longest PSU, 4 GPUs, multiple tubing & fans, etc.). I guess it's just "by design" though with a cube case which I love. I can actually fit a 2nd entire EATX system in this case with 4 more GPUs if I just had a 2nd motherboard tray. There would even be sufficient cooling for both! I understand that people want a lot of rads for the lowest fan noise possible but this case has 4x more rad space than what's even needed to sufficiently cool a 4 GPU & CPU setup (general rule of thumb, 1x120mm rad per device + 120mm rad extra). This case is designed for the 0.1% of the already 0.1% market. It sticks out of my desk like an entire 12 inches so looks unproportional to my setup and want to change to the x5 haha.

You should have just gotten a Caselabs Mercury S8.

Fun fact. I actually had a CaseLabs Merucy S8 before I had the x9. If I could do it all over again, I'd get the x9 again or the x5! This case is 1/3 the price and has even more fan slots than the case labs. Price isn't always better. I only sold the case labs because I wanted to downgrade to a 2 card setup Matx case until I realized that 2 GPU's isn't enough for 60FPS at 4k (well, for most games but not all).

How much smaller was the S8?

I think it's a good size, reminds me of an HP Visualize workstation I used to have. Anyway, the X9 can hold 10 3.5" hard drives before you get to the 5.25" bay options, mods, etc. Not everyone has or wants a NAS, which is where I was at when I bought the case out of convenience and with an eye on building the best virtualization workstation I could build. Got sidetracked by water cooling but I'm going to add more drives (and another drive rack) when I get the chance.

LOL, having a small desk like that must make the case look freaking HUGE! Time to upgrade tables man!

Go to a hardware store and pickup a giant 36"x80" door slab for $30 and paint it black. Use a couple bookshelf stands as legs, works out amazing!

Fit is perfect...

I really like that smoked tempered glass. Reminds me of the 80s.

I like my X9 snow and would not trade it. Being kinda built like a dwarf i like the extra room to get in a do things big hands need big spaces to work and the small cases drove me bonkers.

In the end its all personal choice. Which is why they make ice cream in so many flavors

Question for the X2 Owners. I am about to make the purchase, but I would love to run my Kraken X61 AIO in the front of the case. Do you think the hoses will reach? All the pics I see of AIO's being used are mounted above the CPU.

*EDIT- Tube length on Kraken is 400MM, looking the attatched pic I am assuming i will be ok to reach that
