Diva, what do you think of that EVGA new case (EVGA DG-87) they have that is huge? I mean before I got the Core X9 I was waiting for that case but now that is out. I am debating if is even worth getting that over keeping my Core X9.

Since you asked,

From watching the videos / reviews, it's an EVGA fanbois' wet dream.

For anyone else with half a functional brain, it's a massive waste of space and useless pile of plastic.

I've often been critical of the X9 and its build quality, more specifically, that builders who need this much size, are spending enough on components for high end builds that would really rather spend a bit more on the case if the case matched up better to the overall build's level.

The top end DG87 can probably boast a lot better build quality than the X9, but even the most exquisitely sculpted statue in dung, . . is still ultimately, . . . . just a pile of dung.

My thoughts; . . . .

Keep the X9 and be creative.

Thanks for your responses, everyone. When I look at Smicha's build, I see what I had imagined mine to be. But when I look at IT Diva's build, I see what I would like mine to be. But that level of cable management appears to be because IT Diva built an enclosure so that the cables can be hidden there. Basically, I want to achieve a really great aesthetic with a high performance build. This has been such a problem for me, conceptually, because it feels like it's really hard to achieve.

My fan controller is a lamptron cw611. With the 3x480mm radiators I mentioned, what I'd like to build is something like a 2x Titan Pascal, 6950x, on an Asus X99-E WS 10G board, etc. There won't be so many other components in the sense that I will be hiding the drives as well as I can, and don't have many, will likely go for a few pci-e etc.

But getting the aesthetic right seems hard. I reached out to a local case modder in Belgium and it seems like, perhaps, I may need to gut the case almost entirely to achieve the clean aesthetic I want. IT Diva is right that it is a blank canvas, and I guess since this is my first foray into modding I'm a bit intimidated. I'd love to have a finish like IT Diva's in my end product. But this'll mean painting/disassembling a whole load of gentle typhoons, the radiators, trying to match ram/motherboard/case etc. colour schemes...

Sorry if it seems that I'm babbling here. I'm both excited and intimidated at the same time. Maybe it's 'cheating' to be talking to a professional modder about this but I guess one problem is that I am not sure what I want to achieve is possible.

Thanks for sharing your builds everyone.

Cheers,
Aristotelian

Getting knowledgeable feedback from multiple sources and perspectives is usually the best way to go into a new project in an area where you do not have a lot of experience on your own.

Hi Guys,

I am considering buying an X9 Snow Edition to run a 3 x GTX 1080 air cooled system on an EATX motherboard.

The machine would be used for compute tasks and would keep the GPUs at 100% for long periods of time. I like the idea of a horizontal motherboard so that pockets of heat don't develop between the GPUs, with the top card running hottest. I am hoping that the numerous fan cooling options available would be able to dump the heat from the GPUs.

In case I need more ventilation, does Thermal take sell a mesh side panel for the Snow Edition? I see that they sell a spare mesh side panel for the standard grey unit, but can't see any details of a spare panel for the white rig. Any ideas?

Thanks

You can replace the 2 side panel ,they are identical. In that case the mesh panel is on your GPU side, and the plexi panel is at CPU side.
+You can install extra fans (3*14cm or 2*20cm) on the mesh with cable ties like i did :

They do not make snow panels but you can get the black ones and repaint them.
