I have only had my XFX 290 for a few days and was having no problems with it until just now:
While mindlessly watching some YouTube videos for the better part of an hour, my screen suddenly goes blank and the sound stops. A few seconds later the sound comes back and the screen starts to come back, albeit dimly. then its bright, then its blackm dim, yada yada.
I fire up MSI afterburner while the screen is doing this on again, off again stuff and see my heat levels are at 71C on the GPU. Both VRM's are around 50C.
When I look at the GPU usage, I am pegged at 100% and the current is showing 85 AMPS!!!!!
I immediately crank the fans to 100% and close my browser to get rid of YouTube. While the temps are eventually dropped to 63C, the GPU usage never came down from 100%.
Just to double check, I fired up GPU-Z to verify and it showed the same 100% GPU usage.
After making sure I had everything closed down, I was still getting 100% usage so with the temps holding at 63C and the fans cranking at 100% to hold it there, I did a shut down of Windows.
When I turned the computer back on, everything was back to usual, the 290 was idling at 45C with little to no GPU usage.
2 questions:
1. Anyone else ever have their card suddenly put the petal to the metal in usage like this?
2. Does running a YouTube video put that much of a load on a GPU?
The only game I have tried (so far) with this card is Elite Dangerous and that seldom works the card much harder than 60% from what I have observed,,,,,,,,,,,,
