Red Dragon continues to progress. Here's some more pics to tantalize the faithful who continue to follow my work.

So from here you can see the GPU work I did which wasn't the most amazing but turned out quite well considering the tight bends that had to be performed. Also the replaced CPU -> pedestal line that cracked during reinstallation turned out better than the original so I was very pleased to replace it. True story here, I ordered 10m of hardline to do this project which I thought would be way more than I would ever need. The CPU->Pedestal replacement was the last bit of hardline I had. I used all 10m in the construction of this build which gives an indication of how much tubing you need before embarking on a project of this magnitude.

The system was being refilled and deaired during these pictures. I can now report that she no longer has any loss of coolant and no more bubbles coming up from her system. She has successfully passed all functional trials. So what does she look like now... well that's for the next post. ;-)

Oh and some quick pictures of my M3D printer and Astro A50 headset. More on those later on too.

So I'm in the process of doing my overclock. I will cover this more indepth later in my posts. The purpose of building such an amazing rig is to get the most out of a PC like this while keeping it at a reasonable safe temperature. Essentially we want our CPUs and/or GPUs running at max capacity within their temp boundaries. I have not overclocked the GPUs yet but that's coming. At this point I will remind my viewers of my sequencing of the coolant loop.

Res-Pumps-Ram-GPU1-GPU2-Rad1-Rad2-VREG1-VREG2-CPU-Rad3-Rad4-Res

So my goal here is to keep ambient difference at zero. So my ambient delta should be nearly zero for all these test if I am achieving the intended goal. Now this won't be perfect since I am accepting coolant from the CPU but it should be close since my flow rate and heat capacity should well exceed any heat created by either the RAM, GPUs, VREGs, and CPU.

As a precursor to my overclock work, i have to include some preliminary pictures of my rig though... of course. Here's Red Dragon in her current state with coolant and additive.

So I can happily report that my temperature differences during overclock is minimal (less than 1c). I'll show some pictures and hopefully show my journey to my final speed. The Haswell processor doesn't like more than 100c so I'm aiming for about 30c normally and 90c at full stress test. Since the processor won't be pushed regularly to the max I feel confident in 30-80c normal temps while gaming or doing whatever while I can hit 90c at benching.

Let's see where this journey takes us.

So from the pictures included you can see my journey through overclocking my CPU. My rig ran at 4.5gHz stable and with reasonable temperatures with an H100i AIO cooler but was dangerously close to thermal throttling at 4.7gHz. Here you can see I easily achieve 4.7gHz with a generous margin against max temps. At that point I really wanted to see how far I could push this older 4770k and MSI MPower Mobo. I made the 5gHz range but was running very hot, just under thermal throttling which was against my original goal. It did pass the Prime95 test but I wasn't happy pushing 90-100c to sustain 5gHz. I dropped my stable voltage and freq for a 4.9gHz run and kept temps under 90c as demonstrated in the pics.

So Red Dragon was able to achieve a full 400mHz boost due to the new cooling system and kept the input coolant temp at ambient. So regardless of load, she is a boss. I was hoping to get the full 5gHz out of her but 4.9gHz out of a relatively old 4770k is something I'm very pleased with and shows the system can handle must more heat than I threw at it. At 4.9gHz she passed Prime95 24hr test and is the new permanent setting which I have run flawlessly since. No BSODs, no errors, just pure CPU horsepower bliss.

Please feel free to see my numbers but remember that stability and overclock is unique to each chip and your results will likely vary. I've seen many posts indicating that many users top out at 4.5 or 4.7gHz with the same chip series so please overclock at your own manageable risk. So... what's left.. The GPUs of course!!!

So I went with dual MSI 980 GTX graphics cards under water cooling. I didn't take many pictures since this was straight forward. Essentially before overclock I received a 17k 3DMark score for Firestrike. I successfully achieved a stable overclock (both cards) of +225mHz of both core speed and memory speed. The default values of 1291 MHz / 1190 MHz "Gaming Mode" before my custom OC. Stock OC is at 1317 MHz / 1216 MHz which is pretty paultry considering what this beast should be able to do.

My Final numbers are 1542 MHz / 1441 MHz for boost/base clock and the respective increase in memory speeds. This did give me a nice performance boost on it's own though and jumped my 3dMark scores (Firestrike) from 17k to 20k. Screens included below. The top 4 scores in XTU were mine so I'm very pleased with the performances of my new overclock and the 20k+ score for my new graphics card setup. The lack of GPU overclocking was due to the fact that it was really too simple and I was at 30c max temps with my EK waterblocks. No real reason I could see in why I couldn't go higher but I think it might be a built in limit to what these things can actually do.

Overall, I was very pleased with the results. XTU did erroneously record max temp at 93c but XTU and HWMonitor never recorded temps higher than 85c even under the most brutal testing so I think the report might be flawed since I submitted it multiple times but the temp (despite different runs) never changed.

Please enjoy the pictures. Now, onto finishing the build.

Edit: Top score ended up being 20.7k+ so I was very happy to achieve a 3.5k+ improvement over stock.

Build Update: I replaced my LG 29UC97 ultrawide monitor with the Asus ROG Swift PG348Q which is just beyond huge and amazing. Overclock with G-Sync is as simple as enabling it under Nvidia Control Panel (G-Sync) and then slapping the "OC" button to get 100hz. This thing was worth every penny.

Notable additions to my build are the Dremel Idea Builder 2.0 3D Printer and the HTC Vive. Those I will cover more in a later post. For now.. this monitor and VR is EPIC.
