Long story short but:
  • My Sony Pulse Elite headphones completely died. They will not recharge they are a done deal and I am shocked they lasted as long as they did with all the repairs I have done to keep them functional until now.
  • Come to find out the onboard audio on my Asus Rampage Extreme also doesn't appear to be working with the proper drivers installed. From the control panel they show they are playing the audio but no sound is produced to my headphones/speakers. Right now I am left with using my gpu audio via hdmi to my TV. The last thing I wanna deal with is Asus tech support or RMA.
  • I am hesitant to buy a pci-e sound card because it will affect my crossfire setup from running at 16x/16x as it does now. Running @ 8x won't take much of a performance loss but it's just not something I want to do.

I plan on purchasing new headphones/sound card tomorrow. This is where I need your help.
  • I am buying a set of Beyerdynamics DT 990 Pros 250 ohms but I also had my eye on the dt880 pros @ 600ohms. Which is the better buy for gaming/music/movies?
  • I will also need an external sound card/amp to drive these puppies. I want to know what the best sounding one would be with my setup.
  • I have my eye on fiio e10 but can I also get away with something like a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi HD Sound card? I just want to make sure I have enough juice to drive these cans and have full performance.

My budget for the sound card/amp is about $200 being that I am also buying the new headphones also for another $300.

Last question:

Do you guys also think that if the speakers ports blew out on the Asus onboard sound that the optical port might still be functional?
