Best Budget PC Build w/ GTX 970 - Thoughts? Which Mobo? (Microcenter)

Hey Guys,

I'm helping a buddy build a new gaming computer - we are aiming for the best bang for buck.

Here are the parts....

Total: ~$700

Questions:

  1. Thoughts on the overall build? Love it or hate it? Comment.
  2. EVGA 500B OK? I know its not a top tier power supply...but given the price we got it at and the solid reviews..it seemed like a safe pick. I know there are many rebates/deals on better PSU but due to some time constraints, we couldn't buy from newegg at the time. So do you think this EVGA PSU will be fine?
  3. And MOST IMPORTANTLY, which motherboard do you recommend for < $80? I think we are leaning toward ASRock Fatal1ty Z97X Killer, ASRock Z97 Extreme 4, or Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3.

Motherboard Choices (priced after -$40 combo discount and rebate at MC):

  • ASUS Z97-P ($75)
  • ASUS H97-Plus ($70)
  • ASRock Fatal1ty Z97X Killer ($75)
  • ASRock Fatal1ty Z97 Killer ($70)
  • ASRock Z97 Extreme 4 ($80)
  • ASRock Z97Extreme3 ($65)
  • ASRock Z97 PRO4 LGA ($50)
  • ASRock Z97 Anniversary Edition ($45)
  • Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD3H ($80)
  • Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI ($60)
  • MSI Z97S-SLI KRAIT ($80)

Thanks!!

go for the 600w version since its only $2 more on amazon and the GTX 970's "minimum" requirement is 500w. It should be fine if you're not going to be overclocking

you can check out this as well

The 500W was bought for $39 already...for some reason the price went up today on amazon. But yeah, i agree the 500w should be fine based on the research I did.

1. The build is headed in the right direction. An i5 with any decent gaming GPU is a fantastic starting point.

2. 500B is mediocre quality, wouldn't be my first choice as there are almost always several options to choose from in the $50-70 price class that are significantly better made, but for $40, the 500B is not a bad deal.

3. I would say pick between the Extreme 4, Z97X Killer, Krait, or GA-Z97X-UD3H based on whether you want a Blue, Red, White, or Yellow color scheme wink.gif (yes, even in my most professional opinion the differences for most people between these boards aren't going to be tangible on a technical level, you could compare the number of fan headers or something, but really, they are all a steal in MC combo deals.)

You should return that PSU it does not belong in a gaming system
Why you should not buy an EVGA 430 / 500 / 500B / 600B PSU

Its almost the same
Why you should not buy a Corsair CX

If you want a cheap but decent PSU get a Seasonic S12IIB or the XFX TS aka Core Edition or an Antec High Current Gamer which are Seasonic S12IIB rebrands.
Or get a Rosewill Capstone which are better.

600 watts is overkill 450 watts is more then enough for that system.

Just FYI - I think we decided on this one based on MC availability and the budget.

EVGA SuperNOVA NEX750B ($60 after rebate): http://www.microcenter.com/product/433612/SuperNOVA_750_750W_Watt_Bronze_ATX_12V_Power_Supply

Looks to be a "Tier 2 - Class B" PSU according to this: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1804779/power-supply-unit-tier-list.html
