Laptop Memory 1600 vs 2133

Thread Starter
I know very little in the world of laptops but I just purchased a Sager laptop. It's coming with their stock 8gb ram because any other customization I can buy on my own is cheaper and better. I use 16gb on my desktop and I feel the 8gb that it comes with the laptop will not be enough and at the same time slower(?) It's possible they may give me some garbage 1333mhz ram like they did with my friend on IBuyPower. So it looks like I'm going to need more and I was wondering if I will notice much of a difference between 1600mhz vs 2133 on a laptop because the timings are much higher on average compared to desktops.

Also, any recommendations?

The difference is very minuscule unless you are doing work that requires intensive memory usage. So for a gaming laptop, 8gb @ 1600mhz should easily satisfy gaming needs. But if you like overkill, you can always get more/faster memory.

Here's a good review comparing different speeds, http://www.anandtech.com/show/4503/sandy-bridge-memory-scaling-choosing-the-best-ddr3/1

Hope that helps wink.gif

Well, faster RAM will also help with framerate drops (only minimum FPS effects will be noticeable) in a game where the CPU is the current bottleneck.

Mostly games I have running 24/7 but as of right now on my desktop with Firefox, Mabinogi, Minecraft, Glyph client and Steam up, I'm at 6.97gb usage

Yeah notice that too even when I was benchmarking Mabinogi, it's an old game but I did notice 2-4 more frames a second except it was a 1333mhz vs 2666mhz difference lol.

Because AFK events and I'm sure not going outside when it's dark with creepers running about! lol
It's actually because while those games are not CPU intensive, they do eat up a large amount of ram as you can see. I keep my gaming rig clean from as much software too.
I kinda had to buy a laptop eitherway soon since I'm being sent to the middle east. So no dual monitors or have another PC do all my downloading/torrenting/unsafe-surfing/netflix-ing/anime/etc while I game on the current one :s
So I will have to do everything on the laptop but I'm sure I will hit a CPU bottleneck if I break 8gb useage on the 4720HQ chip.

Well, if this is the case, I believe you'd simply keep less games opened up. (read: one, like a typical human being tongue.gif)
Also, keep in mind that plenty of the RAM usage you see now is just cached stuff. Since unused RAM is wasted RAM, nearly all software will work just as good with less RAM than you are providing right now.
You'd be fine with 8GB, but I am unsure whether you should pick the faster RAM. What's the price difference and how would it affect your budget anyway? If you don't have an SSD getting one would be very nice, especially with the bit of extra on-demand I/O the less RAM might imply.

Not many laptops can support DDR3-2133, so you'll just need to go with the fastest your machine can support.
