My New Build Idea

Thread Starter
It's time for a serious upgrade, so here's what I'm looking to start piecing together...

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0 GHZ
COOLING: Corsair Hydro Series H105 Extreme
MOBO: ASUS SABERTOOTH Z97 MARK S LIMITED EDITION
GPU: EVGA GTX 980 SC Reference
RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB DDR3 1866 (2x8GB)
ROOT DRIVE: Samsung 850 EVO 120GB SSD
STORAGE DRIVE: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD
PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2
CASE: NZXT H440 White/Black
OS: Win7 Ultimate

Again...Just trying to throw an idea together that can sustain some longevity and keep my budget around $2K. Also, looking for a little input as far as compatibility in what I've chosen, and perhaps someone's personal experience with any of the parts on my list.

Thanks,

Darrell

Suggestion? Visit here You can always get raid of some of the RAMs especially if you will be gaming, to bring the cost down, as games rarely uses even 6GB.

I would choose an air cooler over the clc any day. dominator ram is very overpriced with no benefit. also, go with 2x8GB for 16GB set. leaves room for more if you ever need or want to add. I opt for a pair of 970's over a single 980. both the case and psu you posted have more than a few preferable alternatives on the market in the past couple years. I'd change it around like this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($319.99 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: Phanteks PH-TC14PE 78.1 CFM CPU Cooler ($64.99 @ Newegg)

I assume you are specifically going for the Mark S and the white color scheme.

Agreed....but cash really isn't the issue. My whole reasoning behind going 16gb was purely for future proofing if need be. I may even go with the 2x8gb as PureBlackFire has suggested.

Not really going for the White scheme. It's just a really bad ass board. LOL. I have been trying to figure out how to integrate the white into the theme though. My original plan was to go with the blue lighting scheme, but with the camo thing going on with that board, I'm thinking that green lighting might look pretty sweet.

As far as running the 970's SLI, I'd really rather have a single card setup. I am interested in your take on the EVGA 750W power supply. Do you have experience with that particular PSU?

Oh...and I'll have to wait to see what the next Windows OS is all about before I switch from Win7. I absolutely hate the Win8 interface. tongue.gif

Never cheap out on a psu and get a good one all time; it's the longterm backbone of your pc, the psu i suggested is great. Yet if you want one for the future buy the super nova g2 750w, it has great price, great unit; build ready for more than one gpu, quality wise is high and comes with 10year warranty, it's absurd.

The SuperNOVA does look to be the PSU to get...and 10yrs on the warranty is sick! List updated!! Thanks! thumb.gif

Yes but it's too overkill for a single gpu configuration; the 550w I suggested earlier is as good.

you should. never pick the smallest memory dimms. always leave the most possible room to expand.

alright then. single card, not particular to the white color scheme. that psu is the most appealing and one of the best 750 watt units on the market. it's great and unbeatable at it's price exept in the event something better is on sale. 10 year warranty is the icing on the cake. though if you aren't going to dual up on graphics cards you'll never come close to needing a 750 watt unless you go crazy overvolting/overclocking something like a classified and go X99. oh, and I can't stand win 8 either. biggrin.gif. speaking of, here's another build with a 6 core i7 and a 980:

only two ram modules but you can always add more for quad channel, up to 64GB. this Z97 build is smaller with a mid tower and a good, modular 550 watt psu (all you'll need for this setup):

Am I the only one who things air cooling is unhealthy for your other components?
Depending on the task you do, you will either need an 8GB RAM or over 16GB, just 16GB is not worth the move, and until applications will start utilizing 16GB there had been a better platform that is even cheaper to upgrade to. When gaming even with shadow of mordor my rig never uses 5gb RAM and when browsing with over 40 taps open in different browsers it gets capped at around 7GB or less.
Really like the deep blacks of that MSI mobo.
