What do you think?

Thread Starter
Getting ready to drop between 1200-1500 on a new build. I have running my current build for 6 years and its really showing its age( C2D Q6600, gigabyte P35-ds3l). Was a very nice build at the time and I had a blast overclocking every last drop out of it, but time for new.

I have been lurking for about a month and this is my first post. I want something I can overclock, but I don't have to set records with it. I have gone back and forth on air vs. water and have decided that for the money and performance I will stick with air. This is what I have come up with on my own, but would really like some other opinions on it.

i7-4790K
msi Z97- gaming 7
XFX Double D R9 290X
G-Skill Ripjaw X series 16gig (2x8) ddr3 1600
Samsung 850 pro 256 ssd
WD blue 1tb 7200
Seasonic s12g 750w PSU
Noctua NH-D15

still undecided on case, leaning towards corsair vengance c70 or corsair obsidian 450D.

This will be my main rig for the next few years. I would like a nice juicy, but stable, overclock that i can run all the time. I will be using this for all tasks, gaming, converting vids, etc.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or suggestion.

Looks good for 1080p gaming. And a 4.5ghz OC on cpu will be easy and 24/7 stable for long time.

4.5 would be great. Do you think the Noctua is overkill, I know its a monster?

That's a solid build man, but use extreme caution if updating the firmware on that 850. I read something about new firmware bricking them, but I'm hoping that was TLC nand only in which case you should be fine. Hopefully someone more in the know can elaborate.

If you're case can fit it, its a great cooler. Nice and quiet. No such thing as over kill. Lower the temps the better 8).

A similar rig to mathelm's rig, just a few changes. You can prefer R9 290X instead of GTX 980 to reduce the price. Also, Noctua D15 can be chosen rather than AIO water cooling. It's a really good air cooling solution without risks (like liquid leak), and quite.

Thanks a lot for the help. I didn't even know about that pc part picker, very cool. And thanks for the info on the psu, glad I haven't purchased yet. I will be purchasing within the next week or so and will post after. I'm getting that overocking twitch, lol.

I wouldn't say it's overkill, but you can certainly spend a lot less for similar performance. The difference between all the best coolers is relatively minor unless you're trying to push the highest overclock you can possibly obtain on air. If you're happy with a reasonable 24/7 OC and won't be pushing your CPU at 100% utilization most of the time, then pretty much anything will work.
