excellent craftsmanship, subbed to see the final outcome and for the journey!

You're making me wish I went with an R5, nice progress. Definitely show some results with that cooler when you can.

What are the expansion card(s)?

The top card is an Ethernet card for the virtual machine traffic. The bottom card is a SAS to SATA card, I still need to find another to run the remaining drives. I'll run all the SSDs off the motherboard controller because they are SATA 6 ports while the 11 storage drives will be split between both cards in an attempt to "balance" the array bandwidth.

I plan to test out the heatsink soon to see if the 4790K needs to get delidded. I'll be sure to post how the R1 does. thumb.gif

Project 8: Front Filter Replacement

Alright, another quick update for today. I've been trying to figure out a good way to replace the front filter because I don't like the airflow patterns it makes.

Look at that, the bottom filter is just about the right length and its already divided into nice sections. Good thing I don't need it!

Here are my cut lines for everything, I'll be cutting the middle section out and gluing it into the front panel intake vents.

Cut and fitted (Click to show)

Alright, looking OK so far. Lots of messing around and trimming to do. The last two pictures are the "final" filter for one side.

Glue Madness (Click to show)

Here are the pictures of the filters being glued in. I went a little overboard in spots but I wanted to fill any gap I could. The best part is that because of the way the front panel goes on you can see almost none of the glue from the other side. The last picture above is the only place you can see the glue.

Outside View (Click to show)

Last, some pictures from the outside looking into the vents. It is very hard to see the glue or filter in person so it will be totally unnoticeable once it is back on the case. It won't keep all the dust out but it should certainly catch most of it. biggrin.gif

More updates to come soon. Once my file copy is finished I'll be sleeving and rewiring, hopefully it will be done by Monday! Expect updates for the sleeving, OS setup and some other miscellaneous stuff. biggrin.gif

Hi

Do you have any updates? I'm planning a similar build with a R5-case and a Seasonic Fanless PSU. Do you have any informations about PSU- and CPU-temps? And what can you tell about the space between the PSU and the second hdd cage? I did a little bit of research and it seams there are only 2 cm left. A little bit to tight for a fully modular PSU.

Hi. I've been working on the server recently, I'm changing my plans again... haha. Temps have been excellent, the PSU requires very little cooling and with the large CPU cooler my temps have stayed in the 40s w/ the lower power CPU. It is a tight fit with the second cage but there is plenty of room between the PSU and cage, maybe 1-1.5 inches. I can install the cage tonight and measure if you'd like. Are you going to use the same PSU?

That's nice to hear and very encouraging since I read in the Silent PC Review forum that this combination (case and PSU) is not really recommended.

This would be very nice and yes, I'm planning to use the same PSU and had some doubts if the cables would be kinked to much.
Thank you so much

Hey, sorry for the delay. I was copying ~11TB of data and couldn't shut down. The PSU definitely fits w/ both drive cages and a 120MM fan between the bottom cages. Here are some pics:

I noticed when I uploaded these the cage was upside down but it fits the same either way. tongue.gif

No problem, I consider myself more like a plan a lot kind of guy and I'm not in a hurry with the build.
Thank you so much. That should be all I needed to know. I hope your future build plans work out thumb.gif
