@OCDesign glad you like the polish results. Can't wait to see which way you decide go!

The reservoir sleeves have been polished up to what I thought was the most appropriate degree.

They now look like this:

Compared to the way they looked prevously:

It’s not a perfect mirror polish, but rather a very fine brushed finish.

Before:

After:

And, for the benefit of comparison, here are some similar photos without using the camera flash, which on the shiny metal tends to overly exaggerate the surface detail. These are a bit truer to the way the look in person.

Before:

After:

I’m really quite pleased with the results, but there is a problem. That 5mm foam padding that you can see underneath won’t quite compress enough to fit into place between the reservoir and the sleeves - it’s just the tiniest fraction too thick to work as the infill. As such it is currently sitting in a corner, sandwiched between two wooden boards, with an excessive amount of weight stuck on the top in a final attempt at gently...encouraging...it to cooperate. If that doesn’t work, I’ll have to see if I can find an alternative material for the job, or an alternative method.

I’d love to do a motorised PC, it’s one of those mad ideas that really appeals to me. Though I know full well that once I started, the temptation to put the rig on tank treads would be too much to resist…

I just finished skimming/reading through this whole thread for an hour or so. Definitely subbed; this is a crazy project you have going here. I'm really interested to see where it goes.

Tiny update:

The news today* is that, unfortunately, the foam infill idea isn’t going to work - which is very annoying. It's now clear that this particular stuff, contrary to my initial assessment, is just not quite compressible enough to fit into the space between the outer surface or the reservoir and the new sleeve despite my best efforts to persuade it. Trying to use any more force to get it to do so is simply going to risk cracking the reservoir, and I really don’t want to do that.

So we move to Plan B. I’m proposing instead to use a simple shroud of black card, cut to shape, wrapped into a tube around the reservoir and taped in place - thus giving me the required interior colour. Then I’m going to take some broad strips of rubber (cut sections of old inner tube from a bicycle tyre) and fit those around the top and bottom of the reservoir to produce a pair of friction-collars, which will serve to hold the sleeve in place. A rough test of the idea was done this afternoon, and it works, so I should finally get these done and fitted into place sometime in the next couple of days. I hope to have some pictures of that for you soon.

*(of course that is ignoring certain other, rather less important, events occuring here in the UK today...)

You looked through the whole build log? As in the all the months and months of my slow, lumbering, progress? Thanks, that takes some dedication! I'm glad you're enjoying reading it, though I do think my standard of writing has been slipping a bit over time. There's more of the shorter progress updates and a lot less of the properly detailed write-ups compared to earlier on, but maybe that’s just in the nature of doing this bit of the project.

I did notice that, but though there is nothing wrong with the write-ups at all (they're really quite good), the less time you spend writing, the more time you have to do... well, everything else you have set up for yourself. Personally, the pictures and diagrams with smaller amounts of text do well enough for me, but the proper logs with more in-depth explanations are certainly appreciated.

Another little update:

That is the first reservoir completed. I think it will need a final cleaning up, just to get rid of a few grubby finger marks on the sleeve, but otherwise it is ready for installation. Irritatingly the Plan B that I mentioned in my last post didn’t work either, so I had to come up with yet another alternative solution.

This time, instead of a rubber collar, I have just wound multiple layers of electrical insulating tape around the top and bottom ends of the reservoir tube - incrementally adding layers until I got it to a snug fit. Between them is a section of thin black card, trimmed to size and with the window profile cut out (to give the interior colour without the need to use paint, same as the ‘Plan A’ foam would have). This card is wrapped tightly around the outside of the reservoir, so that it doesn’t get creased and damaged whilst the sleeve slides into place, but is not secured. Once I let go the springiness of the rolled card causes it to unfurl, expand to the sleeve diameter, and sit neatly against the internal surface of the aluminium. Finally, to be absolutely sure it all stays in place, and to finish it off nicely, a large rubber O-ring is pushed into the end.

It’s turned out well I think (eventually) and now that I have a method that works I can get the second one done a bit more easily; though I will have to go and find some more of those O-rings. Once installed, all the other offside fittings can go back on, the fibre optics back in, and then it should - finally - be time to fit the sections of acrylic tubing.
