Dell E520 qx6700 OC project - Page 2

I was looking at the links to Techpowerup you provided. Right now price is more important than modular. If I need to do this I'll pay what I have to pay. But less is better right now. I bought alot of stuff to try for my BTX O/C project. Didn't need most of it as it turns out. But moneys tight this month.

If you want something cheap but still decent there is the XFX TS and you dont need more then a 550 watt unit as long as you dont have any plans for a second video card.

In micro BTX a second card isn't going to happen, but I suppose ASUS Mars GTX760 2X single card SLI would count as 2. If my CPU wont bottlenck it that would be my next move. Plus whatever water cooling takes.

Do you know how bad are the "Ultras" I already have. Are they a Tiger Direct house brand or are they a known quantity?

Never mind I read the reviews at Tomshardware and I see what they are. I'll skip the 600W. run the 750W as a mediocre 500W, and buy something better soon.

At least I'll get a 140mm exhaust fan out of the deal.

Please dont multi post please use the edit function instead.
And most Ultra units are not all that great but they are better then that super crappy Cooler Master PSU you have.

A 650 watt PSU should be more then enough for those two video cards.

Thankk you for bringing the PSU issue to my attention. I found an online calculator and entered my maximum spec. for my project and came up 799W. I started looking for an 850W PSU using Tomshardware's PSU tier list. I found an Antec HCG 850W modular PSU for $70 at Newegg. Less than the XFX TS and modular too.

Forget about all online calculators they are all unreliable, inaccurate, and imprecise and therefore useless and a waste of time.
850 watts is MASSIVE overkill and unless you plan on doing a 2-3 way video card setup you dont need anywhere near that amount of wattage.

A 450-550 watt PSU is all you need for a system with a single video card in it, even then your system is low power that a good 350 watt PSU could power it.
Problem is everything under 550 watt is way overpriced and will often cost as much or even more then a 550 watt.

And the PSU you found is a Seasonic M12II which is quite famous for being super loud under higher loads.
If you want a quiet PSU the M12II is not the one you want.

I calculated for an ASUS Mars GTX760 X2 which is my next step up. Also I'm installing 4x USB 3.0 ports so I guess it calculated 100% load for those also. The calculator I used calculated for the QX6800 @ 4GHZ and 1.600V. A setting that I've already run . I also have a couple closed loop H2O coolers I might want to try. $70 is OK for me and I'd rather buy big now than buy twice.
